i just got back from 4wd shop and they qouted me about $3,600. to raise my 93 4x4 Dakota 4"(thats as high as i could raise it they said) because in order to fit a 31" tire under there i would have to change wheels and raise it. they also said trailmaster are the only ones who makes a lift kit for my truck. does anyone know how i could get a little more heighth from my truck without that expensive lift. i hear you guys talk about messing with the torsion bars; what/how?

The torsion bar is the rod that runs from the lower control arm back to the frame, the most lift you can safely get from that is 1 to 1.5 inchs. To lift the truck this way you tighten the bolt in the torsion bar block back at the frame

On my page, I have details on how to crank the torsion bars and install a body lift. I had 31x10.50/15 tires on my '88 with just these modifications. I also have photos of the installation of the 4" Trailmaster suspension kit on my truck. I can say for sure that the job is worth all of that $3600 they would charge you. It's a lot of work.

Matt,
I have a 99 Dakota Sport 4X4 X-cab. I was thinking about the tortion bar lift up front just to level the truck out. I think I can squeeze 33x12.50x15's if I take the front up a bit(maybe an inch or so). I am running a 32x11.50x15 BFG AT KO's right now with no rubbing and without modification, just stock height. Is there any parts up front that would wear quickly by doing this? I dont want to start replacing front end bushings just for 2 more inches of rubber? Your opinion is needed here bro!

Tommy no parts will wear out by the torsion bars being raised. The other thing is you will not be able to get 33", they will rub everywhere. I have a 2000 with a 3 inch body lift on itand the 33" rubbed with the torsion bars in the stock location , the other thing is even if you get the tires on the truck by only turning up the bars dont hit any bumps, you will tear a fender off.

Maybe i'm wrong, but when i bought my truck (used) they had 31X10.5X15 on them. They are pretty wide and corner really well, but I haven't had any trouble with them. I had my friends look over the truck and they don't see any thing wrong with the tires on them. No lift so maybe i'm wrong but im guessing you could put 31's on them.

godgmblr his is an older dak with a diff suspension so no 31" will not fit with out something being done to the truck. He can fit them by cranking up the torsion bars.

89HIDAK, you must be running those 31’s on stock rims on a 4x4. I had 31x10.50 Rims on my ’88 with a 3” body lift and cranked torsion bars and I rubbed the fenders while turning and off-roading. But, I wasn’t using stock rims as in the image below.

Walt-n-Ingrid's Dakota with 3 inch Body Lift, cranked torsion bars & 31x10.50 Tires

Even after installing a 4” suspension lift, I can get the 33x13.50 Mickey Thompsons to slightly rub the front fenders if I twist it hard enough.

You probably can fit 31x10.50 tires on the stock rims and no lift and not have any rubbing on the street, but it will be very tight and I doubt it’s getting any hard trail use. When I had 31’s on the stock rims, I rubbed the frame and when I swapped to different rims and installed the body lift, I rubbed the fenders. The Trailmaster suspension kit requires you the replace the stock rims with rims with no more than 3-3/4” backspacing. A 15x8 or 15x10 set of rims with that backspacing, will push the wheels out of the wheel wells far enough that with 33x12.50 tires, you may get some minor rubbing while turning, under compression. Like I said earlier, I have 33x13.50 Micky Thompsons mounted on 15x10 rims with a 4” suspension lift, 3” body lift and cranked torsion bars. I can get the tires to rub the fenders if I catch it right. I have a beat-up bushwacker on the right front to prove it.

I have a 93 4x4 and 31"s will not fit unless you put on a body lift or mess with the torsion bars.
I had 31"s put on mine and at 3/4 wheel lock they would rub.

I have a 89 dakota with a 3 inch body lift and 32x11.50x15 inch mud terrains installed on 15x10 inch blackouts. When i had them put on, I couldn't get out of the parking lot becuase they rubbed so bad. I put the old tires back on the front to get home. It took me a few minutes or so after I got home to adjust the torsion bars, but this still wasn't enough. Then i broke out the Stihl saw and cut about two inches out of the back of each front fender. That did the job. I live in south-eastern Virginia. I have been looking for a suspension lift for my 89 dakota for over a year with no luck, can somebody please help me out?

I have my torsion bars cranked, and I cut some of the front fender off and it solved some of the problem.. only know it cuts into my tire tread, I have thick treads so it ust cuts, nuthin bad. I want to cut just a little bit more off, but their is the stupid screw holdin the fender, I might just move the screw to the outside, you know, look original. who know's
