I would like to know about the 6-speeds in the new Dakotas.
What is the designation on them?

I know for the Diesel Rams, its NV5600.

Is that the same 6-speed they're using on the new Dakotas?
Or is there a different model tranny that they use on the Dakotas?

And another question, will the new 6-speed out of a Dakota fit our Gen III trucks?
Same question for the Diesel Ram 6-speed?

I don't know all the specifics, but it's a Getrag tranny.

It'll probably bolt up to the engine fine, but I have no idea if the clutch, or mounts need to change. Possibly the driveshaft will need to be shortened or lengthened. Maybe the yoke is different.

I don't think it's such a good tranny compared to the NV3500 used in the previous years. Every time I have configured a 4x2 SLT configured as close to my truck the best I can come up with is about 5300#s for the tow rating. This blows compared to my truck's 6050# rating. When changing to the 5-45RFE the rating (on the 2005) goes to over 7000#. Whereas the 2002 trucks have a higher tow rating with the manual over the auto.

This makes me think it is a weaker tranny and wouldn't be suitable for how many of us use or trucks.

And the NV3500 is a 5-speed right?

Next question, on the Dodge Ram SRT10, they have a 6-speed right?
Is that also a NV5600?

And on the Dakota RT, did they have an available 6-speed at all? I dont remember...

Yeah, the NV3500 is a medium duty 5 speed.

The SRT10 RC uses the Viper drivetrain. I know it's not the NV5600 because that is the heavy duty manual for trucks. I think it uses the T-56. Which shifts much faster, but can't carry the load of the NV5600. The SRT10 QC has the 48RE (auto) tranny just in case you wanted to know.

Dakota R/T uses the 5.9L V8 coupled to the 46RE. They never offered it with a stick. Much to the chagrin of a lot of posters on this web.

Modain, you answered all of my questions and then some, thank you very much.

So now its off to see how hard its going to be to fit the NV5600 under my truck LOL

I doubt it, but I'm going to at least look at some dimensions.

Hey, I had some time tonight and put together a table regarding the tow ratings, etc. of the different drivetrain configurations of Dakota QCs from 2002-2005. It appears that my initial assessment ot the Getrag 238's strength is a little off.

First off, DC doesn't offer any configuration of the GR238 tranny with 3.92 gears. That sucks...

But, when comparing an NV3500/3.55 combination to a GR238/3.55 combination the data shows that the GCWR on the 2005 truck is 500#s heavier and the max tow weight is 5350#s as opposed to the 5150# and 5050# ratings of the earlier years.

It would appear that this could be a viable modification to our trucks if someone was so inclined. Of course, there are the clutch, driveshaft, and other issues to factor in.

You can find the imperical weight data here.

I appreciate thet effort dude!

After some carefull consideration, and measuring, I'm going to go with the NV5600 which WILL fit since I already have a 3" body lift, and then I'm going to replace my corporate 8-1/4 axle assembly with the corporate 9-1/4 axle assembly and then I'll be good to go.

And I'll leave it 3.55 gears front and back until I get a chance to drive it around a bit.
Then I'll decide weither or not to go to 4.10 gears =)

You can find the NV5600 specifications here. This and the other links here should get you going in the right direction for your swap.

Calculating the final drive ratios in each gear looks like a 3.55 rear end (and front - 4x4) will still be good because the tranny is geared very low. Especialy 1st gear for crawling - it is a 5.63:1 ratio!

it sounds perfect but it takes some adjustments to your floor board to make her fit.

gale banks put a NV5600 in their CTD powered dakota and it took quite a bit of sheet metal work.

here it is mated to the CTD.. now if it fits in the same location on a magnum, i dunno..

also keep in mind that i doubt it will ever bolt to a magnum

and here it is in place, and as i can tell, it looks like it's gonna require a lot more than 3" in height.. that crossmember you see running the width of the floor board is about 2" tall and it goes well over it

Those are some great shots of the install.

I'll do some more looking into this.

As it is, with gas prices the way they are now, I wont be able to start this project till February anyway.

Thanks for the info and the heads up ;)

Holy schnikies!!!

That's a huge transmission. Maybe the Getrag 238 would be less of an engineering feat to install. From what I can tell it looks like the clutch, flywheel (maybe), and front driveshaft yoke are the same as an NV3500 truck. Don't know about the driveshaft length or mounts. And I think the starter is different.

But then, maybe you're in it for the challenge and the payoff...

The new tranny is a NG238, I think. Roughly equivalent to the NVG 3500/3550 in strength. Read somewhere they were going mate a NG370 w/ the 2.8 diesel in the Liberties. That tranny had a 4.46 first!
