It mostly is for the carbed version of the 2.2 and 2.5 but most the stuff will apply. Take a look at that mini roots style blower that thing is sweet.
Hear is a page with some history of the 2.5.

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/22.html

And another with some more perfomance mods if anybody is interested.

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/mods.html

I know they arn't much your pretty much stuck at 150 hp unless you turbo charge or run nitrous or one of those wild dual Weber carbs which I have seen make over 200hp but are really not for the street. Well I hope this inspires somebody to build a hot 2.5 dakota and not be pushed around by those V8s and 6s.

That WOULD be cool to see someone represent with a HOT 2.5L dakota! especially if it was a gen2, because they are slightly lighter. is there any room for improvement inside the cylinder heads? maybe you can atleast gasket-match the engine and free up a few ponies. do a valve job, and get ahold of some high comp pistons :-)

I know this dosent really pertain to the subject but...

I wonder if anyone has tried to put a 4.7L in a gen II dakota. I have tossed the idea around for a while.. Almost to the point of trying to find a gen2 in a junkyard, and then a 4.7L and tranny to put in it! I just think it would be cool, thats all. everyone and their brother puts a big honkin V8 in a gen2, I think a 4.7L would be a MEAN gneII (with the manual tranny of course) because its a light and rev-happy motor...

A 4.7 might not fit easy in a gen 2. With there OHCs they might be wider than a BB. And without many aftermarket parts you are pretty much stuck with the hp you put in there. So not many people would mod a gen2 but swap in a nearly stock engine. And the amount of wireing that would be involved! Is the 4.7 that much lighter than the SB engines? It is weird though I have yet to see a 4.7 swap into anything. I have seen plenty of 5.2s and 5.9 magnums in muscle cars even viper V10s, a cast iron truck V10 and the new 5.7 Hemi less then a month after is was out in the Ram but no 4.7. Must its small displacement and lack of aftermarket support.

I am still debating on my 2.5 if I should build it up to 150hp then give it a 50hp shot of nitrous and hope the rods hold up they are light but a little on the weak side. Or swap in a turbo 2.5 engine that will be more work and money but able to make nearly 350hp on pump gas.

Oh yeah there much that can be done to the head there is and older head called the G head that flows a little more stock but the combustion chambers are biger and not as good. Companies like www.fwdperformance.com and www.forwardmotioninc.com sell ported versions of each head. You can mill the head for more compression but no high comp pistons that I know of but I think I will just go for the thiner head gasket and call it good enough. The stock intake manifold is what really chokes these engines off. So I will not port the head much I don't lose the low rpm power that these engines have plus the rpm limiter stops the engine at 6000 and I don't know how one would bypass it. So I would be best to keep the power at 5500 and below. So a good valve job and gasket match would be just perfect along with comp cams stage 2 to cam.

I wonder what would work better. a supercharger or a turbo? I haven't ever heard of a supercharged 4 cyl. engine... maybe you could do both :-) but the fun is keeping it N/A! All motor would give you more bragging rights.......

Oh turbo is much better than a supercharger. Both? why not just go twin turbo if you want that much boost then you could have like 50lbs of boost and see how many pices you can blow your engine into. Well I found a hp calculator site from your weight and 1/4 mile times and acording to that the best I could do with a N/A 2.5 would be high 15s in the 1/4. That is pretty good for a N/A 2.5 but is not going to be keeping up with any V8s. Even with a 50hp shot of nitrous. If I beef up the internals of the engine with turbo pices I could run more nitrous but then why not just swap a turbo on it while your at it? So I don't know maybe I will put a turbo 2.5 engine in it if I want to impress anbody with my 4banger Dakota. Then I could get in the low 13 with 350hp. What should I do? I'm so confused. Buy another fourbanger dakota and do build one of each?

High 15s are nothing to sneeze at :-) what do R/Ts do stock?? low 15s right?

I think turbo is the most viable alternative, as you can find turbo parts in abudance in a boneyard! Wasn't the turbo engine in the vans, a 2.5L? they made a pretty good number of those vans, so finding parts soud be pretty cheap...

Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure it will turn out good. you do have other wheels, right? So if something happens to the 2.5, you aren't up $hit creek without a paddle!

Oh wait I think I ment 16's. Dang R/Ts only are only runing 15.71 I forgot with the 4.7s runing 15.41 according to the magazines with regular cab 2wd short boxes. I might be able to sneak up on a club cab when I am done. But if I come across any '92 or '93 2wd sb rc dakotas I dead meat they ran 14.9s. Well I found a forum for the 2.2/2.5 carbed and tbi engines http://www.turbododge.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=56 and am geting some help there the site is mostly for the turbo engines but there is one forum for the N/A guys. And I have been finding some tips there

Hey I got an idea for your 4.7 4x4. Do you get Hot Rod? I the last issue they had a nice (for a Chevy) 1500 4x4 SB RC that sombody swaped in a 2500/3500 trans, transfer case and a 6.0 engine and added a turbo and a 75 hp shot of nitrous. At 13 lbs of boost that guy ran 10.9 in a 4800 lb pickup with mostly stock parts and tires! I am sure a lighter overhead camed 4.7 Dakota could beat that. And that pickup is his daily driver how sweet is that.

I bet that's one kicka$$ ride to work :-) My dad has an 01 silverado 2500HD (CC 4X4) and its pretty fast for a heavy truck. my dak would probably smoke it though, especially in the 1/4 (he has 4.10 gears, I have 3:55)

the 4.7L has a LOT of potential, but it's relatively "new" still (compared to the LA 318 and the pushrod 5.9L) so the aftermarket is reluctant to "retool" and sell more stuff for the 4.7..
I like the high-tech engineering, that went into the 4.7L. I mean it even has a WINDAGE TRAY, and a cast iron bedplate (girdle to the old hot-rodders)STOCK! And a lot of the internal tolorances, approach race engine specs!!!

I'm willing to bet if someone knows what they are really doing, that you could get 320+ HP out of a N/A 4.7... Well maybe thats wishful thinking ;-P but hey, I can dream can't I....

The engine has been out for 5 years and the Hemi that has been out for 1 already has more aftermarket parts. Witch sucks for you 4.7 guys. I am sure if someone did a lot of porting and custom cams and hand made intake manifold and stuff like that 320 hp would be no problem and pretty good for 280 some inches but may not be much fun in a street driven heavy dakota. I still like the new Hemi and LA engines better for a Dakota they just got more personality and more to inprove apon where the 4.7 has most of its performance laid out on the table from the factory. On he new Hemi you can get almost 40 more hp at the rear wheels with headers and a single 3" exhaust system.

Yeah, theres hardly any "hidden" power in the 4.7L! That's whats cool about the older engines. there's a LOT of hidden power in the 5.2/5.9L engines, you just have to wake it up :-) even the 3.9L can make some pretty good HP!

I gusee it all boils down to how much money you want to spend... you want to play, you gotta' pay ;-P

Sweet a 2.5 turbo Dakota. That must have been hard to do. How much boost you runing and what kind of turbo? Any idea how much hp your making? If I ever get around to puting a turbo on my Dakota it should be much easier since the chrysler 2.5 came with one from the factory in many cars and minivans. It will just take some cutting welding to get it to fit.
