Hey guys, if you haven't gotten an amp for your thunderform yet, get the Sony Xplod XM-1502SX. They're pretty inexpensive and put out 380 watts RMS when bridged into 1 channel. I just got mine put in and it sounds awesome. I got the amp for 150 through ebay too. I think crutchfield or a department store would be around 200.

Darkfury--> You are right that a mono amp will see the 4ohm load that the subs present. Hence the reason that I use a 2channel amp in mono mode.
I believe that with a two channel amp when you bridge both channels and run one load (ie. both subs, one speaker wire) the amp is running like it sees a 2ohm load on each channel. This is how it gets such an increase in power. Because not only is it combining both channels it is also running at a lower impedance giving you more wattage for your enjoyment. I'm not a hundred percent sure on that, but thats how almost every amp manual I have read has explained it. It would be the same as a single 4ohm woofer bridged accross two channels, which my manuals show as running the amp at 2ohms. Any input regarding the validity of this would be appreciated. I hope that I haven't been confused all these years but its entirely possible.

I haven't figured a way to post those pictures of the amp install but I have them and I can email them, just send me an email and I will reply.

Hey DodgedogJB...

I think we are actually "both right" in this case/example...

The way it was explained to me... way back when is that 4 Ohms mono is equal to 2 Ohms stereo just like 2 Ohms mono is equal to 1 Ohm stereo.

I know that this doesn't sound like it makes sense, however just bridging an amplier with 2 channels does not in effect change the resistance load that the amp sees when you wire up speakers of a particular Ohm rating (i.e. 8 Ohms in this case)... it's just the fact that many multi-channeled amps just aren't built to withstand being pushed at 1 Ohm stereo or lower... down to a dead short below 1/2 Ohm.

Now since you are pushing your amp at 2 Ohms stereo, you are actually gettin' the same power that my mono amp can do at 4 Ohms mono (that is if our amps are rated at equal power. My Hercules is rated at 200W at 4 Ohms mono however it jumps up to 375 at 2 Ohms mono.

Fortunately, my mono amp is stable down to 2 Ohms mono (1 Ohm stereo in your case) therefore I can utilize 2 4 ohm speakers to effectively increase my power even more (in my T'Bird). It could probably handle going down even lower, but I wouldn't be fool enough to try it...LOL.

It would take a pretty heavy duty 2 channel amp to be able to hang at 1 Ohm stereo or lower... but I do know that they are out there (like the old Orion HCCA (red) series amps, or the old MTX terminator amps, and a few other "cheater" amps.

Either way... I think we are currently saying the same thing, however if MTX had put 2 4 Ohm speakers in their Thunderforms, I don't know if your bridged 2 channel amp would be able to hang at 1 Ohm stereo... my Hercules on the other hand would beat the crap outta them just like it does on my two current 4 Ohm Alpine Bass 200 12"s.

But either way... I'm glad to hear that you sucessfully mounted an amp in your Dak. Personally I coudn't find the space in mine to mount a "decent" amp for the application without making a few "sacrifices".

You are correct...we are saying the essentially the same thing, just a semantic misunderstanding. You are 100% right that bridging doesn't change the actual resistance of the speaker load. I think people have discussed bridging an amp as basically halving the ohm load for some time and thats how I was refering to it. Its just the way its been said instead of saying 2 ohm stereo (4 ohms bridged) because you get the same power output all together. For example, a single 4 ohm woofer bridged is getting 300w X 1 (4 ohm bridged) which is equivalent to a summed 150w X 2 (2 ohm stereo).

Now in my case I used to drive two 4 ohm kicker solobarics in parallel which presented a two ohm load which was bridged on the amp(1 ohm stereo). That gave an output of 300w. Because the soundstream amp is so versatile I now run it with the 4ohm load bridged (2ohm stereo) and I still get 300w output. I didn't buy the unloaded version because I got full power either way so it wasn't worth it. In fact this amp is 1/2 ohm stereo stable, which is damn near the dead short you were talking about. What a beast!

A generous message board reader has posted those pics of my amp install somewhere on here or on his own server so you can check them out if you would like. Please excuse the mess in the cab during the install, it was a long night.

In reference to the post 2 messages above, I checked out the web site and ebay, and it looked pretty good. No negative feedback on ebay. So, I ordered the loaded, unamplified Thunderform today. I will post back when I receive it.

Also if anyone is interested, I had to do some research leading up to the stereo installation I plan to do this weekend in my '98 club cab. I'll probably strip most of the cab and install sound insulation on the floor, doors, rear sides, and rear wall. I estimated it will take a little more than 60 sq. feet to do what I want. I ordered the material from http://www.mcmelectronics.com. Search for "sound deadener". I got 6 of the 32"x54" (12 sq. ft) sheets for 15.89/sheet plus shipping.

I also found this sound insulation:

http://www.b-quiet.com/original.html

The speakers I'm installing are 2 pairs of the MTX T3.6 3000 series components, with 6-3/4" woofers and 1/2" tweeters. Crutchfield has them for $80/pair, list price $200. They are a discontinued model (not listed on MTX web site), and were part of the entry level series for MTX components. Can't be beat for $80 a pair. The Crutchfield rep said I probably will just have to drill new screw holes to mount the woofers, and the tweeters are flush or surface mount.

Hifi Sound Connections is in Springfield, MO, and I'm only a few hours from there, so I got the loaded Thunderform today, after ordering it yesterday. Looks pretty sweet, but I just finished insulating the cab, so I haven't had a chance to do anything with it but look.

So, Hifi sent me a loaded Thunderform for $285, delivered, as advertised above. Payment options were Paypal, cashier's check, money order, or personal check, so I started a Paypal account.

Finally got everything put back together today. The Thunderform sounds great. The front bolt holes didn't line up with the holes in the floor, but it's in pretty solid.

I'm using an MTX 5 channel amp that I had in my car. It's rated 25Wx4 and 100Wx1, but it tested closer to 55Wx4 and 175Wx1 at the factory. I put it under the driver's seat. There is a point under the front seats where the floorpan dips about 1/2 inch and continues toward the back seat. There was no clearance between the top of the amp and the bottom of the seat at that point, so I had to force the back edge of the seat over the amp there. I goofed and bought 10 foot patch cables when 6 foot probably would have worked, so I had lots of extra cabling to stash under the seat.

My brother and a friend spent about 8 hours on Saturday working on it with me and the installation looks really professional. The only visible differences from stock (besides the deck) are the flush-mounted tweeters and the patch cables visible if you look behind the driver's seat.

With the exception of the Pioneer deck I have an all MTX system. I don't necessarily favor MTX over other good brands, but they make the Thunderform, and the amp and components were the right price at the right time.

If your amp at home needs an 8 ohm load just wire the voice coils of the Perfects in series to create that impedence for the amp.

HOW LOUD?
IP: Logged

Message:
Guys, just HOW loud is the MTX T-form? If the windows are open, how far away can you hear the bass? Nobody has really mentioned HOW loud it is, so I just want to make sure it's capable and not wimpy!

And is it a SEALED or PORTED box?

Secondly, does the LOADED T-form have a space for an amp? If so, does anyone know the dimensions of the hole?

Also, I may be interested in a group buy. Please e-mail me.

Geez... three posts?

The MTX is ok... it's not gonna be "competition level" but it compliments the stock radio with more bass. If you are looking for "really loud" then these might not be for you. If you want a "pretty good" sound with the space savings of keeping your back seat in your Club Cab (since they mount under the seat), then they are the Bomb!

The Thunderform is sealed and the only way you can mount an amp to a Loaded Thunderform would be to modify the middle jack area (which I would not recommend doing).

The group buy on these happened a while ago, and I don't think that another one is planned any time soon.

Did that cover all of your questions?

Rear Speaker Installation
IP: Logged

Message:
Simple question for anyone listening: I'm installing Pioneer 6 1/2" speakers in front and back of my 2000 club cab. Got the front ones in, they sound great--but I'm having trouble getting at the rear ones.

Can anyone volunteer how-to remove the side trim panels in the club cab? I've pushed, pulled, and tugged as much as I dare, don't want to break any clips. I'm looking around the 'net, but no luck yet.

Thanks for the help!
