I guess I am kinda sad right now...

I went to see my "installer" at Circuit City today.

He basically showed me what he was talking about with an MTX Thunder202 amp (probably one of the "shortest" amps available with decent power). He put this amp underneath my passenger seat and basically tried to slide the seat back down the track...and guess what...

It couldn't move past the amp, at least without forcing over the unit. The amp was too tall (or the seat was too low) in the back. So basically unless you get a really small "D" class amp, putting one in that location is almost a "no go" (unless you don't mind your equipment getting beat up everytime someone tries to move the seat).

The other "bad thing" is that the loaded speaker box contains two 2 8 Ohm speakers... which presents a 4 Ohm load to an amp when wired up properly.

Well, to get a good "D" class amp to work well, you have to get down to at least a 2 Ohm load (by having two 4 Ohm speakers instead of two 8 Ohm speakers).

MTX in their "great wisdom" only allows the 8 Ohm version of the 6000 in these boxes (with no option to substitute 4 Ohm versions), and to get an amp that pushes enough power at 4 Ohms but is small enough to fit in such a cramped space is next to impossible!

I am so bummed out right about now. I really don't want to get the "amped" version of the Thunderform, but since I can't proper fit a real amp in the truck, I guess I don't really have much of a choice. It's either that or not at all.

Maybe later on down the road, either MTX will allow 4 Ohm speakers in their box or I can save enough money to buy the unloaded box and get some 4 Ohm 6000s myself and a decent "small" amp to push them.

Man this just sucks... I just wanna scream!

I fit a US Acoustics USX2100 under the drivers seat with only minor fit problems. I think it 13 X 9.5 X 2.5 or close to that. The seat has full movement and the amp does not touch any metal

Maybe I got the Dakota CC with the "extra low" seats huh? Cause I just don't see any way to fit an amp longer than 10" inches or taller than 2 inches under the seat.

What was suggested to me was to modify the "jack area" on the box and put an amp in there... I may have to look into that.

The best configuration i've seen with the Thunderforms is a person on the R/T list (and in Dallas) who modified his seat to fit the cross-overs in the actual wood under the seat and the amps in the middle of the Thunderform box. (MTX leaves a space between the speakers for the factory jack and tire-iron.)

The original orders left MTX on Tuesday, May 29th. They Have to ship to the distributor. From they should arrive on Monday. They will be individually sent out on monday to you. Sorry for the long wait, but I said it may take up to a maxinum of two weeks before they arrive. The reason for this is that the boxes each weigh over 50 lbs and they are the size of your back seat. If you wanted them shipped faster then the cos would raise exponentially. BUT I know how you feel, I cant wait either.

I have several bits of info for you. The first is that the MTX subs sound damn good with 300 watts total RMS power. I was a little hesitant about the 4 ohm load the subs present but when you bridge it the amp sees a 2 ohm load. I run the sub package off a Soundstream Reference 300. It fits under the driver seat with no problems.

There is also another amp location that is available if you are willing to take a little time to make it work right. I have a large 4 channel Alpine amp under the rear driver-side speaker. The catch is that it is inside the body of the truck behind the pannel. I had to cut a very small peice of sheet metal to get it to fit. The amp is bolted to the interior sheet metal. The screws run through rubber feet to help absorb vibration. I can post a picture of it if you like. The best part about this setup is that a) it takes up none of the usable space in your truck b) no one would ever know to look there if they wanted to steal it. I have had zero problems with this setup and I have done some hard offroading.

If you respond you are going to have to speak up so I can hear you over the bass! "Make ground go boom"

Hey DodgedogJB...

I'm wondering if you got the "loaded" MTX Thunderform?

If so.. then I hate to break this to ya, but the Thunder 6000s that come in the loaded box are actually 8 Ohms... bridged, your amp would only see a 4 Ohm load.

Now this probably won't make much of a difference in how it sounds, but you wouldn't be getting as much power out of your amp with a 4Ohm load as you would with a 2Ohm load...

I really wish that they had given to the option to put 4Ohm speakers in the "loaded" box so that you really could get to a 2Ohm bridged load. That would have been really sweet when paired up to one of MTX's Class "D" amplifiers...

Oh well.. I just wanted to point that out to ya... Now if you got the "unloaded" box and put your own speakers in, then disregard this post.

BTW, the amped version of the Thunderform was not all that bad... it definitely adds more bottom to the stock stereo with a mimimum of extra expense and hassle. But still... I think a separate amp is the way to go if you got the room to fit it in there.

Okay folks! There seems to be some serious confusion out there on the loaded verion of the Thunderform. Let me clarify.

The box for the Dakota comes with 2, 8 ohm 10s. These are wired in parrallel. This means that when you measure the impedance at the speaker terminals your meter will show 4 ohms. When this is bridged, your amp will see a 2 ohm load. A lot of people are complaining about MTX not offering 4 ohm versions in the loaded box. They did this for a very good reason. Two 4 ohm speakers in parrallel would read 2 ohms at the speaker terminals. Most peoples amplifiers are not 1 ohm stable which would not allow you to bridge your amp when running this setup. Just by this box and hook it up to your amp bridged and everything will be fine.

And if anybody is interested I have a picture of the amp mounted in the location I mentioned above.

Dodgedog is right, in parallel, you take the recirocals of each sub(which would be 1/8) and add those together(which is 1/4). This fraction equals 1 over the Resitance so you have a simple proportion. The resistance comes out to 4 ohms total. The people complaining need a stronger amp, not different subs.
And could you send me those pictures DODGEDOG? Thanks

That's why I would want a "Class D" MTX Amp to go with them...

They are mono amps that are very stable (even to your 1 Ohm bridged example), run cooler, and are smaller to fit in the tight space of a Dakota.

BTW... call me silly, but I still don't see how you can get a 2 Ohm load from 2 8 Ohm speakers unless you are saying 2 Ohms stereo right since it is bridged since that is still just 4 Ohms mono).

I haven't taken a Physics class in awile, however I have had stereos for a pretty long time. In my other vehicle, a 96 Ford T'Bird, I have a mono HiFonics Hercules amp pushing a 2 Ohm load with 2 4 Ohm Alpine Bass 200 speakers. Since it is a "mono" amp, I can't run 1 Ohm stereo.. but I get the same result.

That's how I thought the "resistance" equations worked when paralleling speakers... if not, then please enlighten me... cause installers have been tellin' me wrong for way too long... LOL.
