I'm in the process of buying a 2002 Dakota Club Cab Sport Plus from a dealer. The problem is as follows...they had to order the truck in and said it would take between 6-8 weeks, it has now been 8 weeks and my truck is still at the factory with a D1 status (gateline schedule - scheduled to be built). The dealer now says that it wil be shipped out on March 20(can they build a truck that fast?), and arrive sometime near the end of the month ...which would make my wait 12 weeks. I asked the dealer for a courtesy car, but he refused saying that it wasn't his fault that the truck was delayed. So I was wondering how long it takes on average to get a truck ordered, and if I have a legitimate request for a courtesy vehicle.

I ordered my QC Sport Plus 4x4 on 12/28/01 and took delivery on 02/08/02 - exactly six weeks. Sounds like your dealer might have screwed up the order.

Wow!!! ordered my 2002 11-15-01 picked it up 12-12-01 a day under 4 weeks. I had an issue while ordering mine too. I don't understand it, all these stories about people having problems while placing orders. The next time I order a new vehicle, any little problem I have, I'm gone.

That's what I think...cause after four weeks he told me the truck was at E status(framing stage), then at week six, he tells me it is at D status(firm schedule - allocation and all parts available). At first I didn't know what all the status codes meant, but I searched the internet and found a site that tells you all the codes. Man was I pi$$ed when I found out that my truck went from E to D now is at D1. I'm almost positive they didn't put my order in until lately.

Just for reference, I ordered mine on Oct 17,2001 and picked it up on Nov 21, 5 weeks to the day. It sounds like your dealer might have lost the order and placed it again. It doesn't take long to build the truck, the time is lost due to shipping it.

Go to another dealer.
What specifically did you order on this that they had to build for you? If there's something in your state that fits your needs/requirements/desires/options/color, etc. -- it's all computerized. They can have another dealer deliver to your (former) dealership. That's why the Atlantic Blue 2002 1500 that was
delivered to the dealer I wanted had 126 miles on the odometer. It came from another dealer. Right truck. Trouble was, dealer tried to screw me on my trade in ($8500 for my Solar Yellow garage kept Dakota). I walked out on the a-holes. - Jim

JimB...I am in Calgary, Canada and all I ordered was a 4x4 5spd in black with the anti-slip diff and the infinity sound. They looked around and said there were no dealers that had any 5spd's so they had to order it. I was thinking of asking for an extended warranty, or some accesories since they can't give me a courtesy car. Am I out of line?

If I were you, I would be up there every day hassling them for answers. I ordered a 2001 Dakota w/almost everything the first week of April. They said it would be in before June 1. On June 1 I went to speak to my salesman and they said he was off that day. Next day I went back and talked to another salesman, only to find out my salesman quit 2 days after I placed my order. They assured me my truck would be there any day. Monday, June 4, they said it would be there the next afternoon. It didn't show. Found out order had been shredded by original salesman along with many other orders and important paperwork. At that time I finally began to yell while in the sales area. Within minutes they were on the phone with any dealership in the country that had a RC 4.7 5 speed that was red. They found one with the Motorsports Edition package in Omaha Nebraska. They went that evening to pick it up. The next evening I drove it home. It cost 1500 more than the original. Got it for same cost as original w/friends discount. Also they sent it to a custom truck shop that installed a body color rhino liner and a techstyles tonneau cover for free. I would push very hard for some free accessories when it finally arrives. It can pay off some times. Good luck!

Ordered 2 dakotas 10-08-2001.
Took delivery of one on 10-29-2001 and the second on 10-31-2001. 3 weeks is the fastest I ever had one built. Your dealer may have messed up the order or there could have been a parts shortage. My dealer is 3 miles from the factory so I think that had something to do with my fast delivery time. Once the truck is built, it has to go to a shipping/ storage yard to be loaded on a rail car for shipment to Canada. It is hard to wait, I know, but it will be worth it.
I had one dak that was a dealer trade (1997) and it was the worst dakota I ever owned. I'll never do a dealer trade again. Other people have no problems so I guess it is the luck of the draw.
There is only one factory making the dakota and it also makes Rams, so it is very busy. The end of the month will be here before you know it.
You can always talk to the sales manager or general manager to see if they will knock off some more $$$ for your wait.

My 2002 QC came in 7 weeks but had a damaged hood, and missing the tire & handling package, a loose holddown chain from truck above fell on hood. Dealer said hood to be replaced and package would be put on. One week later they called me that truck was ready. Went down there and hood was repaired not replaced, I could see the crappy work where dent was and anti-sway bar was still missing. Dealer refused to change out hood and put bar on truck. Said his profit was to small to do this. I refused truck and ordered somewhere else. Sad part of this is truck is still on dealer lot and some unsuppecting guy going to get ripped off.

Same thing happened to me (hood-wise) when I took delivery of my Durango, however, my particular problem was a crappy paint job from th factory. They brought in 3 other Patriot Blue Durangos into the service area and told me (no kidding) - "Pick a hood." I did. Four "guerillas" took mine off, swapped in the replacement. These guys will do what it takes to move units off their lots. Quality in some cases - job 2.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to go into the dealer and hassel him to give me a courtesy car, some cash back, or some options. I sold the car I was driving before since I thought I would have my truck by now so I'm stuck taking the bus everywhere. I talked to another sales guy at the dealership, and he seems to think that the order was put in late, because it is going to take another 3 weeks from March 20th to get my truck. Not by the end of the month, like I was originally told. It's like I have to wait another 6 weeks for my truck...I've been waiting long enough!!!

Mine took 12 weeks. They had to sideline it while the transmission was on backorder (5spd manual). Then everyone at the plant took a couple of weeks off for Christmas. I am assuming that was when the engine was being bolted in. When I received it I found the left engine mount only had two of four bolts and they were only partially screwed in. The dealer repaired it, stating the bolts had "backed out". Hell, they were never in there! I got it back with 80 more miles on it than when the tow truck driver picked it up. But I noticed he had a four wheel drive version of my Quad Cab sitting in his parking lot a few weeks later. SO the tow truck driver must have been putting the extra 80 miles on my rig with the engine only partially bolted in.

All crooks.

You guys are really giving me the warm fuzzies about my order. I placed the order on Feb 13. As of Wednesday, March 6th, DC customer service said it had shipped out the day before. It has to go from Warren, MI to New Boston, MI to Selkirk, NY and then to New London, CT (where my dealer is). So, I wonder how long it will take to get from Warren to here? Anyway, I guess I'm going to take a real close look at the truck when it shows up to make sure everything is in good shape. Here's a link to a checklist to use when you pick up a new truck:

Sheesh! I ordered mine in late July '97 and it came in in late October! Back then they were having trouble keeping up with demand, supposedly. I'm just glad it came in in good shape, and that I was able to find a place to rent me a car for really cheap when my insurance company said I'd used my time. Mine was replacing a totalled Ranger. Down payment went ... down ... during that period. Sometimes it's better not to be so picky...

Im On Week 17. Status is KZ M (waiting for first rail departure). Mine sat in BX status for 12 weeks. What ticks me off is that the dealer could not or would not find out why and Chrysler said "because of variables they could not grantee delivery."

yea but give me the reason for the hold up. No one can give me an ETA. I figure another 3 weeks for chrysler to load it on the train and get it to the dealer on the west coast.

Your dealer messed up the order. You should threaten to cancel your oder and go else where.

i work in an automotive plant up here in canada where we make 2 types of vehicles. i myself bought one for my wife. it took us 8 weeks to get the car, and we were bumped up cause of a cancellation.
one thing people have to understand is that noone in the auto industry wants you to wait for your vehicle. i work 1 1/2 to 2 hrs a day over time and saturdays, just so we can get these vehicles out to the customers. my wife was pissed at waiting that long, but saw how tired i was at the end of the day. She finally understood what goes on when people order their cars and the production process. your vehicle has to go through many stages, and what some dont realize is that if there is a "screw-up" done on your car, it has to be fixed. right now our repair area is so packed, we had to stop production for a 1/2 hr so repair could make room.Yes defects on vehicles are not "non-existant" and sometimes they are really bad. whether it be a crossthreaded bolt, or paint scratch, these things have to be fixed before it reaches you. then the shipping process can be long too. they dont just get shipped out one at a time, vehicles going to this dealership, or that delaership get loaded to deliver to that dealership.

Basically though what im saying is that if you are going to order a vehicle, be prepared to wait for it. but in the end its worth it, cause its exactly what you wanted.

i was lucky when i took my drivers side rockerpanel off, i found over a dollar in american change!!!!!!! i guess some guy on the line mustve lost it while building my truck.

I hate to tell you this... but,

I ordered my truck on 4/25 and the dealer just called - it will be here "next week" :) If he is right then it will have been just 3 weeks! I'm almost freaked out by this and it makes me a touch worried - like maybe it's the wrong truck. Oh well, I know soon enough I guess.

- John

BTW I'm in south Florida and got an '02 QC, 2WD, 4.7l, AT, 3.92 LS, HD service, 4 wheel ABS and towing package in silver with grey buckets. Maybe one was almost finished like that when I ordered mine?
