Subject: Distributer drive gear problem
IP: Logged

Message:
My engine began cutting out in my 3.9 liter engine. So i took it in to my mechanic. He said that the drive gear and bushing in the distributer had worn out. He said it had worn out so much that i needed an over sized one. When he checked aftermarket, he found out that they don't make them anymore. He knew they had made them because he has replaced them before, so there must be some some where. Does anyone know what i can do or where i can find the oversized drive gear and bushing?

No offence to your mechanic but you don't need to go over size. Just need to replace the bushing and gear and you are on your way. I've done this before workd good.

My mechanic said that the gear and bushing had worn away the motor or what ever its connected to so much that a normal size one won't help. He said i would have to get an aftermarket oversized one.

It's a brass bushing that sits in a cast-iron hole. If it was that much out of round...the distributor shaft may be warped.

1992 dodge dakota misfiring will not exelerate for first 5 or 10 minutes of operation. Problem disapears once warm. It may misfire occasionaly for the rest of the day. My mechanic says I need a new distributer a new gear and a new bushing. The bill will be $700.00. Is it not possible that a new gear and bushing is all that I need. Also if this is the problem why does the fault almost entirley disapear once the vehicle is warmed up.

92 was the first year for this problem to show up. If you know what you are doing it is easy to check. I don't remember the specs off hand, but you can tell by moving the rotor by hand. With the dist. out check play in the shaft to test it. I am sure someone on here has access to the TSB.

Any further info.
I think this is my problem, I am getting a surgeing/chugging at cruising speeds on my '93 318.

I'd like to know a little more about tackling this bushing and gear myself.
Does the gear need to be pressed onto the dist. shaft?

$700???? Your mechanic sounds stupid AND dishonest. A whole new distributor doesn't cost that much. Grab the shaft and shake it sideways, as from 6 O'clock to 12 O'clock position. If it has any movement, the bushing is probably bad. And if the problem is gone after it warms up, there is probably another problem somewhere else.

92' 3.9L, 180K miles. I've had the same problem with the shaft being replaced once and a number of rotores damaged over the years. Had gotten to carrying an extra one in the glove box. The problem isn't going away now by replacing the rotor, and it sounds like I'll need to replace the shaft and gear underneath it. I understand that there is a TSB, does anybody have a copy of this? Or does anybody have the service manual that would show the shaft, gear and what tool is needed to pull the gear?
Thanks
Scott

The Distrubutor Drive gear is the exact same one that Dodge has been running for the last 39 years ie 3.9l -273-318-340-360 the bronze bushing is the same also while your at it replace the Distrubutor also. I had the same problem also and went into the garage and scalped the ole 340 for parts and haven't had a problem since and thats been 30000 miles just make sure to change your oil a couple times after to get any possible metal shavings out of the engine.

Thanks, is there a special tool needed for pulling out the bushing? I took the shaft out but was unable to get the bushing out.
