I have been having a little trouble latley and wanted to run it by you guys. (4.7 quad 5 speed 30k miles)
Sometimes at a stoplight if I take my Dak out of gear I have a hard time getting into first gear.
I can get into any other gear easily.
I have been driving standard trans for many years now and often will hit 5th before going into reverse to "mesh" easier. This does not seem to help for 1st however.
also there is no grinding so I am sure the clutch is working properly, just heavy resistance to engage when vehicle is stopped.
If I need to hit the service center that is no prob, I just have to put some OEM parts back on to minimize suspision. :)

I too have the QC, 4.7, 5spd....
It seems the 1st and reverse, aren't synchronized, not well anyway. When I encounter this same thing, this is what helps me some.
While stopped, I try third before 1st, seems to synch the gear while your sitting there to allow for a smoother 1st. Likewise I'll try 4th to synch Reverse. My experience has been the a gear on the same side of neutral, works better than say going from 2nd to 1st, while sitting still.
Try it and let me know how it goes.
For real, sometimes, I think I'm going to break something putting it in 1st!

With 4.10s in the rear how often do you need 1st gear? Unless my truck has a load of some sort and/or am pointing uphill I almost never start out in 1st gear. This way when I get to 2,500 RPM I am going faster than 14MPH.
Anyway, TexasTodd's suggestion is a good one. I have found that it works when I encounter similar tranny stickiness.

It is definatly not bad enough not to live with...(what was it my english teacher used to say about double nagatives?)
I have tried 3rd and 5th to sync. same issue. although my standard practice it to go directly oposit of the gear trying to mesh with.
I will give a better effort to try 3rd then first.
From many years of riding motorcycles I know that it can be diffacult getting into gear while stopped. (usually they grind a little.) maybe the dodge has some kind a grind protection built in.
kinda reaching on that one but I have heard of something to that effect on a car that I test drove once.
Anyway to the 4:10 question.
The 4:10 have made me so much happier but 4:56 would have been better for me.
I just upgraded to a set of 265\75\16 revo's and while I love these tires they are a little taller.
(265\70\16 OEM GY) I don't like to start in second because it is still a little underpowered and feels like it still luggs a little. I am going to pick up a set of "summer" wheels and tires 255\55\18 and that should get me back to torqy starts that I like so much.
Side note, Todd I know you got slammed a little on another thread earlier and I would just like to say that nearly all the mods I have considered you have done and have given such good feed back that I have felt very comfortable (almost fearless) in doing the mods my self. I.E HO cams, clutch fan removal. I for one apreaciate your input. I also think you put it very well in your appology...good work.
Thanks for the input guys I will definatly sleep better tonight, that is after I install my fog lights on the rear bumper that light up when I put it in revers.
Sorry for the long post...but your hear to read anyway right?!?
