I hear it broke down on the way to the Detroit show. Something about ball joints?

The latest rumor is that the 2005 Dakota make-over special will now be debuted at the Chicago show in February. Perhaps there were just too many 'negative' PR questions to answer at this time, or maybe the beancounters at DC decided the majority of the vehicle shopping world is so overjoyed at the prospect of dropping $35,000 on a Hemi-Griswald Vacation Wagon that the lightweight, four doored, torque monster truck would go unnoticed.

Honestly, the Duravango and Magnum lend little reason to get excited about the Dakota's new look. Before the takeover, Dodge cars and trucks were sleek, curvy, and beautifully designed. This new Kraut batch looks boxy, overweight, and bloated with a face that's guaranteed to upgrade every other car parked near it.

Or to put it technically, they look a tad European.

That hunk of sh!t cannot even get under 8.5 seconds in the 0 to 60! Face it you got screwed because of your brand loyalty, I say that because they aren't selling except to the DOdGe diehard. I'm willing to bet that if they made 1000 of the old body style with the Hemi - they would outsell the new improved version...

if you kept the same body style, added a hemi, they couldn't make them fast enough.

I love my 01 dakota but if the appearances keep going the direction they're going, my next truck will be a Colorado. Not really a ton of options out there anymore, aesthetically speaking

If they change the body style on the Dak to look close to the new durango. Then I won't buy another new Dakota. I'll just buy low miles used 97-04 Dakotas until something better comes along.

I was brought up in a Dodge loving family and the tradition continues with me. I have had a 95 Dak, a 01 Dak and now I ordered an 04 Durango. I have driven a Gen II, Gen III and now a new Durango so I have lived all generations of Dodge since the mid 90's. My mom has an 02 Durango and the comparision isn't even close. The interior of the 04 is almost what you would find in a fine luxury import with the Indiglo gauges, Capelli leather, etc. All the Durango has done is take the front end styling cues from the Ram and applied it to an SUV, you guys seem to like the Ram why not the Durango???

Last I checked the Ram had an engine under the hood. When I stopped at the dealer and looked under the new Durango's hood...I saw half an engine. The rest of it was shoved up under the dash.

Similar to say...a minivan?

Saying the new Durango gots its style from the Ram truck is like saying Nell Carter would look great if she cut her hair like Halle Barry.

If you need a minivan, but just can't quite stomach the thought of piloting one, then the new Caravango is the best option out there. Unfortunately I take my '98 Durango wheeling virtually every weekend, my only complaint being that it's a tad too big for some trails and too heavy for the 360 engine to grant any genuine ooomph to, despite numerous mods.

That new Durango is top heavy, bloated out to Town and Country proportions, too low in front, and underpowered for the weight. Unless it's only purpose is going to be soccer team delivery, it's of no use to a buyer such as myself.

The new interior only serves to pronounce BLAND as a fashion statement. Take a look inside a new F-150 or an FX-45. Now those are nice interiors. I'm a Dodge guy, have been for decades, but if the new Dakota comes out looking as inbred as the 04 Durango, with the same vanilla flavored upholstery, I will be forced to switch brands.

I agree tne new Durango is a$$ ugly, and looks like a cross between a van and a SUV. If the Hemi was offered with the old body style there is no doubt it would be flying off the lots.

I went to the autoshow last night. I sat in the new Durvango and it is made of the cheapest Revell model kit plastic I have ever seen. I asked the guy standing there by it that you could ask questions about it. He was a sales guy at a local dealer. He said they are not selling that well yet. He did say it rides and handles a lot better than the old one. I told him that was fine but I can not get past the ugly looks of it. He said "The look will grow on you" I said "No I don't think so." They did have a cool looking Ram called the "Rumble Bee" It has a SRT-10 hood, some lower ground effects and some graphics on the side. I don't know if they are going to make it. but it looked neat though.

The Rumble Bee was designed with the muscle truck enthusiast in mind. Its offered in with the Hemi only. Its a bit pricy but not a bad way of getting the sporty look without spending thousands in after market add ons.

The real ride that I am looking forward to purchasing is the Dodge Magnum. Sort of a tricked out sporty looking station wagon. Of course they don't call anything that isn't euro a station wagon, but we all know they are. Its roomy, powerful and quiet. I think the front end is a little fugly but the side and rear styling is simply jaw dropping.

I do a lot of automotive display work, so I get to see this crap at least a year in advance. So If you guys have any dodge spoiler questions or toyota, gm, ford, ect ect... just ask. I might know, or even have a picture.

Tibbs,
Well it looks like we agree to disagree. Of all your banter the only thing I agree with you on is the fact the front bumper is too low, DC did it this way to provide safety by having the bumper heighth be the same as most passenger cars, don't worry though the ride heighth, wheel base, width, etc. all are way bigger than your 97-03 Dakotawagon. I really don't know why you think Ford's interior is so much better than the 04 Durango, yes it is plush, but the Limited interior on the Caravango is filled with rich leather and brushed aluminum pieces, not el cheapo plastic knobs, etc. like all Daks, and Dakwagons...finally a step into the new century by Dodge, falling in line with the Chrysler lineup: yes the Town and Country, the Crossfire, 300m, etc. you can have luxury and rugged good looks the proof is the 04 Durango. Please don't be upset when I run over you with my chrome clad 17" aluminum rims shod in 265/65R17 rubber. Have a great day and have fun muddin' redneck!!

The new Durango was a big mistake, like new Coke! Dodge needs to fire that design team, they just killed Durango sales and sent the expedition, Armada and Trailblazer sales soaring with this 04 model. It may ride well but that won't make you feel better when everyone on the road is laughing their a$$ off at you. And that interior, my god, it's almost as ugly as the exterior. The REAL nice interiors are coming from Ford and Nissan, the Durango's looks like an obious, in your face cost cutting exercise! Put a Hemi in a turd, it's still a turd but with a Hemi! If they bring out more vehicles with the Durango's down syndrome style, I'll give Dodge two years to go out of buisness. I have bought Dodges for 15 years, but if this keeps up, hello Ford or Nissan! I'll say it again, A$$ UGLY, A$$ UGLY!

Hey now, it's 'southwest' redneck. We ride horses, not sisters.

Look hard enough and you'll find that even the Pontiac Aztec has an enthusiastic following (and I suspect I know where the recently laid off Pontiac design crew landed for current employment). Like I said, if it's a grocery toter you wanted, you bought right.

Me want truck.

I only rail on the new Duravan because I had my heart set on trading mine in for one. Then I saw it. The consuming feeling of disgust was like walking in on a naked grandparent. Believing that "hey, maybe it will grow on me" and wanting to abide by my original plan, I went down and drove one. Ugh. All the excitement of the Hemi nomenclature goes out the window when the accelerator is depressed. God only knows why they would tune the engine down to 335HP, for the HEAVY vehicle in the lineup.

I agree the new interior is nicer than the original Durango and Dak interiors. But compared to the upgrades every other manufacturer has performed (except for Chevy), they're still behind the competition. I doubt many people buy Dodge because of the contemporary interior design cues. It's more like "Hmmm, an upgraded milk crate and rope belt seating system...but it's got balls! I'll take it!".

Show me a nice German interior and I'll point out that it's in a castle.

In contrast to Dodge, the new Nissan Titan is incredible inside....unfortunately it's exterior is the only thing on the road more stomach turning than the Durango. Was there a Fugly contest? Is Saturn's birthright under threat of overtake?

Historically there's always been a market for Gremlins, Mustang IIs, Matadors, and Bonnevilles. As you've demonstrated here today, the tradition of finding beauty so rare nobody else can possibly see it, still carries on today.

Enjoy your new van. See you at bridge club!

eddie, I guess guys like you that buy the 04 Durango will keep me laughing on the highway. Also, you won't running anyone over in that thing because it won't be able to keep up with anything except bottom of the barrel econo cars. The performance numbers on the 04 Durango are pitiful, and that's being nice. The fastest test run I have seen is mid 16 1/4 mile and a 8.5 0 to 60, in the same test just about everything beat it, Hemi or not, it was a dog! You will be starting behind the power curve and have to mod just keep up with the STOCK competion. Oh, and did I mention it was ugly, A$$ ugly, not much you can do about that.

I have always wondered why the auto companies continue bringing out ugly or boring designs. It cost the same to make a cool looking vehicle and it does to make and ugly one. So why don't they make cars/trucks look good anymore. I am not saying all cars and trucks are ugly. But the pre-German Chrysler had some knock out designs. Now they are like most German cars. Cold and industrial looking. Granted they may drive great, handle better. But they leave me with a cold feeling. I guess its just a let down to me seeing how the old Chrysler stuff looks a lot better than the new German stuff.

I have to agree with what tibbs just said. If you park the Ugly F-ing thing near a garbage, there will be a smile on the workers face when he walks back to his truck and he'll say"I didn't know how lucky I am driving such as great machine;thinks Durango driver".

And what about German quality?? It's so good that when you take your benz to get new parts for the ones that wore out, you think nothing of it because it's made by Mercedes right? I wouldn't have there overpriced cars.
