I have a 2000 Dakota with a 4.7L V-8 with 53,000 miles on it.
I noticed radiator fluid dripping under the truck. I took it to a local shop to have it fixed.
It turns out to be a hole in the timing chain cover. The shop tells me the part is out of stock in Texas. They did manage to find one somewhere in the U.S. but he didn’t tell me where.
I am trying to turn the over to my extended warranty service contract people. They are already starting to take the 'we are not going to cover it' stance because they feel because the unit has 50k miles on it and is not material failure so it must be because of corrosion, which they don't cover.
Now my question is, has anybody had something similar happen with their trucks or any other vehicle? Has anyone heard or read any type of service bulletin, recall, or complaint of this happening? If this material is aluminum or cast iron, shouldn't they have a longer life?
I have started reading through the NTHS board and does anyone know of other sources to read?
We have been dealing with this shop for about 20 years and played little league ball together, so I trust the shop.

You can easily see the water jackets. Could the timing chain have rubbed a hole in the aluminum?
Has your friend checked the junkyard for the piece?
Since it is aluminum, you may be able to find a welder to cut out the bad section and weld in a new piece. Good luck!
