Subject: Armor All Bad?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have heard that Armor All is a petrolium distillate and if used causes cracking instead of protecting. Is it true or internet rumor ???

I had heard that Armor All contains alcohols that cause the vinyls to excessively dry out. I've also seen and heard that it can cause black plastic parts to turn white, something how it magnifies UV rays or something.

I've never seen anything scientific just heard from people that used to use it and don't anymore.

20 yrs ago I used it on a Monte Carlo I had, it caused the vinyl top to severly crack also the dash, and the tires, it had been in perfect shape before that. I have never used the stuff since.

Armor All ?!?!?

The only real way to see if it is a petrolium distillate is to get a copy of the MSDS or look on the bottle itself and see if it says the ingredients are flammable.

Some of my buddies recommend 303 Aerospace Protectant. It has spf 40, is water based, and doesn't contain silcone oils. It makes your dash look like factory new, gives everything a "silky" sheen, but not too shiny, and it lasts longer ... without the longterm damage!! Also, it gets rid of that brown film that develops on tires.

Protectant 303 works great (with no petroleum or silicon) to age your rubber and vinyl.

*** For The record, I DO NOT SELL PROTECTANT 303. I am only posting this as advice. Boat & RV shops carry the 303, and you can check out Protectant 303's web site where they offer a free sample.

If you try this product, come back and let us know what your results are.
--------------------------------------------------

** WARNING ** You should never put any shiny treatment on the part of the dash that can reflect in the windshield. Very annoying and DANGEROUS driving down the road on sunny days and seeing the dash reflecting in the windshield like a mirror. May cause an ACCIDENT !!!

I too have stopped using AmorAll in favor of Vinylex and/or Meguiar's. Sounds like 303 is my next purchase.

The Armorall tire treatment has got to be the worst. How do they stay in business?

Guess I'll put in my .02. I've been using Armor All on all my cars since I was 15 (I'm 32). I haven't experienced any negative effects, personally. I like the "low gloss" version that they came out with a few years ago for the interior.

I have a 1968 VW Karman Ghia that belonged to my father. He always used Armor all on it and I've continued the practice and that car is in mint condition, inside and out. I show the car too.

Different strokes for different folks.

I happen to own a 01 Dakota, Andy L. So I frequent this board. I was simply using my classic VW as an example of long term Armor All use without any negative effects. Just my personal experience with it.

Mabey you should speak with a health professional about all that pent up anger you have.

I too have used Armor All on and off for a number of years on interior, tires, tops, etc; haven't noticed any bad effects other than smell, don't really care for that so I use it pretty sparingly on inside so maybe I'm not the best judge. Just mt 02.

I LOVE ARMORALL I HAVE BEEN USING IT ON MY 1996 DAK FOREVER. THE ONLY REASONS YOU GUYS ARE GETTING CRACKS IS BECAUSE ARMORALL DOES DRY OUT AFTER A MONTH OR SO. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS KEEP PUTTING IT ON EVERY WEEK LIKE ME AND YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS. DUH

Like Fillman & Rob, I've been using Armorall since I got my first vehicle at 15 (I'm 42 now).
My '84 Monte Carlo SS & my '76 CB750 Honda have been treated with Armorall since new, no cracks in the vinyl, no discolorations. Both look brand new. I've used Armorall on my '03 Dakota inside & out, brings out the shine on the interior. Just my little testimonial.
Your results may vary.

I have been using 303 an my Extang tonneau cover for about 6 months now. I like it, seems to last well in the Fl sun and the rain. I just recently started using it on the dash ETC. The shine it leaves is more of a satin finish . Only problem is the stuff is about 3 times more expensive that Armor All and hard to find( in retail stores).Next time i'll order on line
