Subject: engine revving?

Message:
At highway speeds, the engine speed seems
to jump 500-1000RPM in either direction -
often has a hard time staying in 4th gear on
level highway - engine will rev & truck goes in
to neutral briefly, or downshifts. The dealer
upgraded some software & cleaned the
throttle body, but it didn't seem to help. Could it
be related to the throttle position sensor?

I have i 5.9 and what has been happening to me is at highway speeds the rpm will jump about 500 north. It felt like the tranny was slipping so i topped of the fuel. Then i thought it was the fuel filter but i cant change it because its ontop of the gas tank. But everyone i talked to has said that it is the throttle position sensor. Now mine is not as bad as yours going into neutral and downshifting but it still sounds like the TPS. Does any one know what they cost.

I spoke with both Dodge & an independent mechanic today & got some other possible insights into the problem. With my vehicle, I only notice it at higher speeds - a Dodge mechanic said another customer had a similar problem that was solved by replacing the fan clutch. A faulty one can cause the transmission itself to overhead - the incorrect amounts of internal pressure that result can cause the trans to attempt to shift (engine revvs as a result) - the other suggestion was that it perhaps needs simple transmission service - a restricted trans filter can starve the transmission of fluid, causing it to cavitate - changing internal pressure & thus the problem. I'm going to try the service first & afterward check the throttle position sensor. Have a decent length trip coming up in a couple days, so I should know if the problem is solved within the week.

Thanks. I like the idea of cavitating the tranny because of a bad filter. But the fan clutch seems a little funny because at high speeds the wind should be blowing enough through the rad and tranny cooler to cool it. But i think you might be right maybe all we need is a tranny service.

I know nothing about trucks and could really use the help, so that we won't be taken to cleaners when we get the truck serviced.

We have a 2000 dodge quad cab and it just started to rev as if the engine is cold, but it does not improve. The RPM do not register any change from normal shifting, we are just hearing the reving noise. We called the service techs and they say it is the fuel filter too. Is there anything else we should be asking or be aware

Okay I had mine in yesterday for this same problem (All my problems seem to be way too common-anyways) I have had it in 3 times now. They updated the software for the computer (I can check the work order for the exact ones if anyone needs them) and I had the air filter repalced, spark plugs (52,000 km) and had the throttle body serviced. It seems to have helped but it has only been a day. I find my problem is intermittent to begin with so it is too early too tell. I was told after my truck did this throughout the winter months that there is a sensor on the battery that could be out of whack...of course they weren't 'too sure' though?!

Just got back from a long trip ... unfortunately the service seemed to have no effect on the problem. One good thing (I hope) is the shop (long-time tranny-only outfit) said the trans is mechanically fine as far as they can tell. I'm taking it to a mechanic that specializes in automotive computers to see what he comes up with. I also plan on contacting the Dodge factory (again) & see what they can suggest. I'll post any new info here. (P.S., I also had the PCM software upgraded a while back).

I'm hoping my original suspicion was correct.
After flashing the PCM w/sofware upgrade,
and having both the throttle body and
transmission serviced, the problem remained.
I spent $50 & put in a new throttle position
sensor did a substantial of freeway & city
driving & everything worked perfect. The real
test will be the next long trip (coming up in a
few days), but as far as I can tell the problem
was a bad TPS.

It's been a week & a bunch of
city/fwy/mountain driving (including a trip to
Mexico) & the problem hasn't occured since
replacing the TPS. Night & day difference -
glad the problem was simple & inexpensive to
repair - very disturbed that the dealer,
manufacturer, & most shops I explained the
problem to never even suggested the TPS as
a possible cause.

For any who still suspect a problem similar to
the one I had - it was very intermittent. First
experience over a year ago, then went away for
a matter of months -- the past few weeks &
months it went downhill very fast. If the
symptoms seem to go away, remember the
TPS along with all the other things the dealer,
etc will suggest. I've since found out, metal
fatigue from use itself on the contacts can
cause the problem to gradually become
worse as time goes on.

Good luck.

I have a similar problem on my 2k QC 5.9. The tranny does not unlock the torque convertor going up a slight hill and will downshift to third instead. It also chatters loafing around town in 4th with the convertor locked up as if it is trying to unlock and you can watch engine rpms waver +/- 150rpm and feel the truck shaking and shuttering. Problem has been very intermittant and I was told that it was faulty programming to meet EPA mileage requirements. A reprogram was supposed to be out in April but I have yet to hear anything. this TPS issue has sparked my interest because if it were bad, the computer would not be able to match throttle position with vehicle speed and might explain my terrible gas mileage....a problem the programming was supposed to fix!!!!! I am calling my dealer tomorrow to try and get him to replace the TPS.

Thanks team for getting me going in a new direction.

Mar, are you saying that you had a similar problem as I. If so, I might need to name of the dealer and phone number to hook mine up with. If this is the case......YES!!!!

Warranty or not ... the headaches & delays I
experienced trying to work through the dealer,
let me to just install the unit myself - it's a very
easy installation (2 bolts, and a snap-on
electrical connector), and a new Mopar TPS
costs around $47 - any Dodge dealer will have
it.

I had a similar problem to the initial posting by inte:

When it feels like you'r tranny is slipping it is most likely related to the trans shaft speed sensor. It may not be totally bad. What happens is the tip of the sensor is magnetic. Over time metal shavings from the fluid builds up on the magnet so that it doesn't sense anything.

You might try unscrewing it from the side of the transmission and cleanning it or just put in a new one they are only about $25 from a dealer.
