I have a 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 and NP231 t-case. When ever I want to put it into 4lo I can only get it into Neutral. Then I must turn the truck off, and it goes in to the lowest position it can. When I start the truck again my 4x4 light is off and I must push the lever forward a little and I hear the gears grinding and it finaly pops into 4lo. Is this normal?

Yes it is normal.
Putting the truck into 4 lo is going to be the toughest thing you ever will have to do.

The way i do it is get rolling at about 5 to 10 miles. Put it in neutral on the shifter then put the transfer case shifter in to neutral then swiftly with force jamm it in to 4lo you might still here some gears grind but its sounds worse then it is. Take it out the same way. If you still have this problem. Turn the engine off.

Thanks mar. See if you can help me with another problem with my t-case. I was under my truck and noticed I have a bit of a leak where my driveshaft goes into my t-case. There is about 1/8" of "clean" shaft exposed out of the t-case and I can see where some of the fluid from my t-case may have been thrown on the underside of the bed, on the exaust pipe and near by parts aswell. Is this normal?

That could be a oil seal or a bearing in the t-case. The shinny part could be normal because the shaft is not held in there it just slides in and out it is held buy the rear axel. when the rear suspention compresses or opens up it will cause the shaft to move in and out about 1/8 an inch but there should be no leak. I wrote this for you some were else also.

Also remember to only use mopar ATF III it has additives in it for the mopar tranny that no other fluid had. If you don't use it you will get rought shifting and deteriation.
