Message: If you got 140,000 miles out of a Dodge truck, you are very lucky. I anticipate, based on present deterioration of my Dakota, a life span of about 80,000 to 100,000 miles before it gets towed to the junkyard.

Message: I have a 2001 Dakota 4x4 and I've also had the "whirring / winding" sound when I speed up and slow down. I haven't noticed much noise when turning except when in 4x4 at slow speeds. Then there's a disgusting crunch / grinding noise that can happen. My brother who is a dodge salesman tells me that the Crunch / grinding noise is normal for a 4x4 at slow speeds in a sharp turn. I don't know if I believe him...anybody have any hints as to what might be going on with the whirring noise?

Message: Sounds like your front CV joints are going. Same thing happened on my Grand Cherokee.
Although, keep in mind that Dodge trucks are built with very poor drive trains and suspensions, so "normal" could be true in this case.
I will never buy another product made by DCC.

Message: We took our 2003 Dakota Quad (4.7 litre, limited slip) in for a run of the mill oil change, tire rotation and front/rear diff lube change (21,000km). Turns out that one of the pins holding the clutch packs in place had come out and now it is sitting in the dealers shop waiting for a new rear end. The only real hint we had was an odd noise sometimes on cornering.
I was told by one of the mechanics that the LS rear ends are very touchy and the we should change the lube every year (it's about 16 months old now) and coast around corners, especially hills!?!? He also told me he did another one just recently when the owner brought it in for an ABS light (debris damaged a wheel speed sensor).
The service guy told me it could have locked up while driving down the highway. Considering that could have been at 120 km/h later that day, we are glad we took it in.
The long and short of it is that we are without our truck for a week or more waiting for parts and we are wondering what kind of mistake we made. Based on what we learned yesterday and this website, it sounds like DC has a problem with this LS design.

Message: Like Dan, my 03 Dakota Quad Sport Plus without noise or warning at 15,500 miles showed a brake light, then ABS light, then check engine light while odometer and speedometer failed. Only tach and other gauges remained. Under warranty, Dealer found metal all over wheel speed sensor and inside rear differential while the case was coming apart. Amazing that it didnt lock up.

I bought a 2004 quad cab 4x4 with a 4.7 engine in it. Its a rebuild and the guy lied about what he did to it or had mental reservations on the truth I was going to take it on vacation but all this talk about diffs locking up got me scared

Message: Add mine to the list. 2000 Dakota Quad LS. I bought it new. This truck has only 35,000 miles on it. Never pulled anything. Just had to change my Diff also. It was making a whooping sound in the turns. When I asked why it would break at such a low millage, the service rep tried to get the someone to come out and talk to me. Funney, everyone was busy. They have been for three days now. I'll just keep calling every day tell I get an answer (I know the answer). Cost me $1,090 with a 10% discount! Whooopee!

Message: I have a 95 dakota and I just got it. It used to be my grampa's and I know he didn't take too good of care of it. Right now me and my dad are having problems with it. The car will go in reverse fine, but for some reason when we try to move the car forward, the back wheels lock up and will not move. I think it might have to do with differentials, but I'm not really sure. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. It would be much appreciated.

Message: 98 ram 1500 5.2 Auto>Whiring sound above 20mph. It does not change in pitch with putting in 1st or 2nd. The truck has 82,000mi, rear end fluids changed 20k ago, had trans convertor rebuilt under warranty @5yrs old, purchased new. I have pulled a 16 foot boat/trailer 5-10times.
