Subject: p0500 speed signal IP: Logged
Message: I have a 4.7 2000 2wd dakota. I have 50,000 trouble free miles. I recently had the ABS light and parking brake light go on and the speedo didn't work until 35 miles an hour. I replaced the rear speed senor on the diferential the Abs and parking light went off. The speedo quit working and a check engine light came on. I ran the codes throught the computer and it spit out --P0500--DONE-- i know the code means ---"no vihicle speed senor signal dected during road load conditions"--
Has this happened to anyone other then me? What solved the problem?
Thank you Buford

Message: I have the same problem with my 99 ram 1500. Speedo does not work until I hit 23mph ABS and Brake lights. Code reads P0500 replaced VSS. Just came up out of the blue. Tell someone knows how to fix this problem.

Message: same thing here.
ABS and BRAKE lights came on first, then check engine and no speedometer reading later.
i get code P0500 (no vehicle speed sensor output)
this happened at about 71,000 miles
you need to replace the "rear axle/differential speed sensor" not the transmission output sensor (about 30-40 USD from dealer, easy to replace yourself)
some folks have had the abs/brake lights only with no speedometer or engine light probs, and if the rear speed sensor doesnt fix it, it will need some abs diagnostic (maybe abs unit)
from other forums and searches on the net, the speed sensor malfunction with the above symptoms are VERY common...

Message: Hi. I'm having problem with my dodge durango 2000. The scanner reads speed sensor output. I changed the sensor (rear axle) with no improvement and still the same reading. Is there any other sensor that you suggest to change? Thanks for your help.

Message: I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4X4 4.7L. I have had 139,000 surprisingly trouble free miles. Today I have had the Check Engine Light, ABS Light, as well as Brake Light come on. In addition to those lights, I have lost the speedometer until about 35 MPH and a code P 0500. Have any of the about sensors, fixes, or tips corrected the issue? I don't want to just through money at it and HOPE it gets rectified.

Message: solution to the problem fixed it about 6 years ago, there is a sensor in the top of the rear end replace it. make sure the new one seats properly in the hole. if you have to, clean up the rust with a rat tail file real light
it think the part was 50-60 dollars at the dodge dealer.

Message: I have been read up on many forums, and the only solution i have
read that hasn't been tested was to replace the DSC control unit.
I'm not sure how much that will cost but if you are willing to try it,
then good luck. It was said to be the most common reason for the
abs brake and check engine light to come on with the P0500 error
code and the speedo not working.
