My gas gauge in my 95 Dakota Sport is constantly bouncing up and down even when the truck is sitting on level terrain and completely full. Has there been any recall on the sending unit for the gas gauge that i was not aware about and if there was how would i go about obtaining one getting the problem fixed.

I also have a 95 dakota with 125,000 miles. Around 115,000 starting doing the same. I changed out the fuel pump (in the fuel tank, not fun) and the bouncing stopped. The contacts on the fuel gauge were worn out. Might be starting on yours.

i am having the same problem with my gauge in my 93 4x4 318ci dakota. the only difference is that mine didnt start until i did a wicked burn out. then my gauge was bouncing side to side like crazy. it has gotten a little more stable but it still has a slow eradic bounce now and then.

Mine did it about a year ago after I had exhaust put on. I heard of guys replacing just the sending unit rather the fuel pump. After another 8 months the problem came back again though. I just keep track of my mileage till summer, then I'll fix it.

I think a while back there was a recall or SB talking about the fuel gauge. Had something to do with the ground. It would cause an inacurate reading.

I have a 94 and had the same problem, now it does not work at all.

The strange thing is that my low fuel light comes on at the correct time. If its the sender, why is the low fuel light working correctly.

the GAGE works from a resistor that regulates voltage to the gage. The LOW FUEL LIGHT works from an on off switch.

Alas, same problem with the fuel gauge at 99,140 miles on a 1991 Club Cab. I was told by the dealer there are 3 separate TSBs out there on this: #081191 Oct. '91, #085893 Dec. '93, and #083394 Jul. '94. So, let's review...they've known about it for awhile and done nothing; and as trucks have aged most of them end up with the problem and still no recall - and probably won't be as this is not a safety issue! The fix at the dealer involves a tank drop, an "ordered" wiring harness, a hole drilled in the firewall, and a partial dash removal. In other words, a $300+ repair. I fixed mine myself to repair this annoying, yet common, problem and pocketed the money! Very messy tho'

My 95 is doing the same thing at 71,000 miles. Odd thing, many years ago my two 1979 Dodge cars did the same thing.

My '94 Dakota club cab is doing the same thing right now. 65,000 miles. It started several months ago as just erratic bouncing. Now it always reads empty until I get to about a 1/4 tank, then it works. Is it really a $300 repair?

Just purchased a '94 4x4 3.9 ext. cab.
I've had the same prob. Vehicle has 170,000 mi. on it. Fuel gauge takes it sweet time to go to the full mark, when filled. After that it never reads right. After a few days of driving it'll hover around the half and eventually drop to near empty.

So if there is a recall, your saying the dealer won't fix it for free, 'cause it's not a safety issue?

My 95 318CI didi the same thing first just bounced around while moving then at a stop it would be right on now it just reads emty, sometimes there is a little jump, What does it take to fix, I know I have to drop the tank, bu is it the sending unit or the float

I fixed mine, $180.00 have to drop the tank was not that bad of a job except to get the bolts lose a lot of WD-40. I cut mine off and replaced them It works just fine But there is no recall Thanks To Chrysler to cheap.

I have the same issue and have had to replace the sending unit three times... I have a 94 Dakota with 110,000 miles.
The contacts on the reostat part of the sending unit corroded on mine and all I need to do is drop the tank and take an pencil eraser to the contact.. where the float arm swings.. Mine had nothing to do with the wire connections...
The original part was $60 at the dealership and then labor (they wanted like two hours).
I got the old part from them and figured out the fix. I know that there was some sort of service bulletin about the ground wire on the fuel pump but I think that was refering to a no-start, no fuel pressure issue.
There are two strips on the sending unit, The first is the resistance type to show fuel level and the other must be either on or off to have the fuel light. I also have the 22 gal tank and when the unit was put back in the last time, it was screwed all the way down, so now the gauge reads like it is a 16 gallon tank... I just haven't bothered to fix it... Until the sending unit fails again... Oh, I also LOVE the fact that the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump... (SARCASM)

I nevere gave it a thougt about the pencil eraser but you still have to drop the tank. A Freind of mine has a dodge caravan 90's? it did the same thing showed empty all the time then it just quit no fuel pump at all,the unit is complete pump sending unit everything, I bought mine from a parts distribution(where the repair shops get thier's)It cost $180.00 just for the pump assembly not labor

My 95 DAK 3.9 ext.cab just started doing this hunting thing.It goes up and down and never stays in 1 spot. 2 weeks ago when I shut it off, then turned it on it would go to empty. If I tapped the gauge, it would come back up. Now it seems to be working properly. For how long, who knows? Any body have any clue what the problem is?

I have a 91 dakota, the fuel gauge quit working about 4 years ago, I recently replaced the bed, and while it was off, I pulled the fuel gauge sending unit from the tank, there are 2 sensors, one for the low fuel light, and the other for the gauge, the center pivot pin on the float arm that connects to the "wiper" was loose, I guess it was just a crappy design that wears out easily, I just took a ball peen hammer and a center punch and spread the end of the pin (use a metal backer on the pin) and it tightened up the float arm and the wiper on the sender, and now it works great! I wish I had done this years ago, It only took about 5 minutes to repair once I figured out what the problem was.
