95 Dakota, 318. Gage started bouncing at 20,000 miles. Dealer "fixed" it three times. At 69,000 miles it is back. Time to drop the tank myself. Is there a good place to get a NEW sender unit, or is it part of the pump? Is it only available through Dodge?

Mine has been working good ever since I put it in myself. If a Dealer can't get it right after 3 Times they are not trying to fix it.Drop the tank and repair it your self

95 Dakota, 318. After three "attempts" by a local dealer to fix my gas gauge, I gave up and started counting miles. Then I got the bug so I dropped the tank. Yup, the dealer had fixed the old gauge. The phillips screws holding the sender on the body of the pump/filter/tip over valve combo were stripped. The sending unit was badly burned around the contacts.
Autozone sold me an exact duplicate (right down to the manufacturers name and part number), and I am now back in business. It even starts easier.
Dropping the tank is not a fun job, but I would do it again. $154 at Autozone sure beats $320 at the dealer - for the same part.

I have a 91 Dakota and the gas gauge started acting up. I took the tank off and replaced the sending unit. 6 months later it was doing it again. The low fuel light continues to work. This is what I did, I put the truck up on jack stands, removed the left rear wheel. I put a jack under the tank. Loosen the two bolts holding the tank,lower it down some and remove the filler tube and vent hose. Reach in where the wheel was and take off clips holding the fuel lines on and unplug the wiring. Remove the vacumn line, drop the tank on down and unscrew the top of the fuel pump sending unit. Take it out and take a pencil eraser and rub the contacts on the sending unit. Put it back in and line the float up pointing to the back of the tank. Put it back together and it is a pain getting the lines back on as there isn't much room to work with. It might be as easy to take off the bed. But it only takes a hr. or so to do it. Working fine so far!

It has been almost a year and a half since I replaced the entire fuel pump - to fix the gas gauge. Now, when the tank gets below half, the gauge stops reading properly. It will stick at about 3/8 fuel remaining. And when I fill it up, it takes maybe 30 miles for the gauge to move from the 3/8 mark to full. The gauge wiper arrangement is very cheaply designed, and it seems to work that same way! At least the odometer works so I can figure out how many miles I have left. I have never had any trouble with my previous GM vehicles.
I really believe the eraser-on-the-contacts trick works, but it is a pain to drip the tank just for that. When it totally quits again, I will have to drop the tank.

Sometimes when I turn on the head lites the instrument panel lites go out and ALL the guages, speedometer and tac go to zero. I know it's a bad ground but where? I've tried adding a ground to the back of the panel circuit board but to no avail. The fuel pump has been replaced.
