My 92 Black Dodge Dakota paint is literally bleached and peeling from the Arizona sun. Anyone esle had this happen. I contacted the local dealer and they said that there is no recall on the "factory paint", but they would allow me as a curitsity $350.00 towards a paint job and it had to be done by a certain alotted time frame (I believe it was 30 days).Anyone with information please help..the truck runs great..but she looks so ugly...TIA Joy-N-AZ

Next time use better wax... that'll keep your paint good longer.

I'd take them up on the $350 if you wanted to get it fixed.

everytime someone crys about a bad paint job it ends up they live or stayed a long time in the American southwest. I was in Colorado a few years ago and noticed that every blue or black vehicle that had Colorado plates had severe paint bleaching. Seems to me that it would be kinda dumb to buy a vehicle with those colors if the older ones on the road are doing that already, don't ya think?

I bought a black 99 Dakota about six months ago. I recenty noticed the clear coat on my hood is starting to crack and peel off. A few spots are really noticeable. I have been waxing the truck every month since I bought it.
My father bought a 94 Dakota NEW and it did the same thing within a year. The dealership repainted his hood and roof under warranty. We both live in Ohio.
One of the guys at work has a grey 92 Dakota. His paint is peeling off the hood and roof. Right down to the primer.
You would think that they would have improved the paint after having so many problems. But I guess not.
I just sold my black 90 S-10. 12 years old and the black paint still was glossy. espically when waxed.

In the late 80s and early to mid 90s , the "big3"
all had paint peeling issues. I got into the autobody business because of it...they needed people to strip the paint off cars. I`ve been in the paint part of in science 1990 at the local GM dealership and have stripped literally 1000s of cars and trucks. Now I just paint at a smaller shop closer to home, partially due to the fact they finally got their stuff together and were able to make the paint stick.
One of the other problems they had was , they used alot of single-stage(no clear coat) paint, mostly on white , red , and black vehicles. They all faded within the first year and were repainted under warranty. I don`t know if you were the orig. owner of the 90 , but I`d be willing to bet that it had been painted , or kept in the garage out of the sun.

There are still a few paint issues out there , but nothing like it use to be. You might want to check you dealer and see what they say about you 99 Dakota.

I have a Flame Red 98 RC with 81K on the clock. About 2 months ago, I noticed the paint on the hood had what looks like a chalky white film under the clear coat. I washed the truck and applied wax and the film disappeared. A week later, after a heavy rain, the film was back. Washed, re-waxed hood, film disappears. Next rain storm, film back again! Took the truck to the dealer and he said because the truck is out of warranty, they can't do anything about it and suggested I use a better wax. Switched to Meguiars Gold Classic and it has lasted thru about 3 heavy rain storms so far. I'm thinking about trying Zaino Bros. wash and wax but I really don't want to invest in that high dollar kit for crappy paint. Eventually, I want to get the truck re-painted, red over black. Right now, I really need to wash my truck, it looks filthy. BTW, I guess I should note I drive nearly 100 miles round trip for my work commute so road dirt, bugs and grime seems to build up pretty quickly. Just my 2 cents worth.

Most 1992 Dodge Dakota paint is peeling, I have taken several pictures around my town of 25,000 people, & have argued with our local dealership about the horrible paint they used that year. Now thanks to their horrible paint job my truck is rusting. I love my truck, but hate the way it looks.... How can I sell or trade it in with such a horrible paint job??? Someone saying next time use better wax is true ignorance, look around at the 92 Dakota's & Shadow's, not eveyone could be having a wax problem. Dodge must admit that they used horrible paint.
Oh by the way to the woman who got $350.00's for the paint job congratulations.. Dodge first told me that they would cover the cost of my paint job, when I came back they told me they would cover half the job, & the last time I came they said they would not paint a truck from 92. Who is playing around?? Frustrated Dakota owner in Oregon..... Maybe it's all that rain?!?

WTF...Why do people continue to complain about paint that is 10 or more years old!
How long has it been peeling? Are you the orig. owner or the 8th and the first 7 beat the piss out of it? Did you go back right away or wait until it was 6yrs. old and out of warranty?

BTW Dodge DID admit they had a problem ...just as GM and Ford did , but if someone thinks the manufacturer should pay to strip and repaint a veh. that old you must be insane!
If they did that they may as well replace engines with 100-200k on them because they had a bad ring on them and now everyone should get a brand new crate engine....
Where will it stop!

Have you had any resolution from Dodge, dealership, or representative? If so, Please let me know how the heck i can get on the bandwagon.

Thanks!

For the people that listed their paint is peeling, please describe. Is your paint going down to the grey primer, or does the top coat seem to feel rough, and white. If your just experiencing the whitining effect(delamination), try this: get some wet/dry sandpaper preferrably 2000(always better to start out high), soakin bucket of water, use a a sanding block(a must, so you dont leave your fingers behind in the paint), and lightly sand an area where the whitening is. Chances are this will remove the whitened area (clearcoat), and take you back to your base coat (color)You must be careful not to sand too vigorous, as you may just sand your base as well(some years were light on the base). Try this,& if it works, call some shops and ask how much just for a clear coat, may save ya a few bucks. just my $.02, good luck. Oh and if your paint is down to the primer(grey) sorry, your gonna need to get the car reshot. Oh and wax probably wasn't an issue, you can thank your local EPA...

One reason it probably fades is because of the area you people live in. The other reason is only if the paint is the dark blue. This paint is the worst paint dodge ever had. It's not a bad looking color but it sucks. I have it on my 95 dakota which i puchased in august. I haven't had any problems yet probably because it has been repainted but I also have the same color on my 93 caravan and it has been peeling for 3 years now. it's not fading because i live in New York. Mind as well get it repainted not using factory paint.

Well Boys, Explain this...
I have a 99 Dakota Sport that is black. I am the original owner, the truck has never been wrecked, and I have kept it garaged since the day I purchased it. I live in the South. The roof and the sides of the bed have white spots where it looks like the paint has just faded. I am about to sell the truck, and I am concerned that it will not sell with all of the spots. This truck has been washed religiously since day 1. I am going to talk to the dealership and see what they can work out.

Okay so here is another one to add to the list. I have a 1992 Dakota Sport, white paint. For the people out there that want to know why guys like me are still complaining about bad paint jobs that are 10+ years old...it's because the paint jobs went bad after 3 or 4 years after the trucks were purchased and the dealers would offer only $350.00 towards a repaint job. My dealer would not give me the money unless I entered into a contract with his shop to paint the hood and roof to the tune of $1200.00. I never got the money and never got the paint job. Chrysler just painted the Dakotas crappy and would not take care of their customers. My 1992 Dodge Spirit still has a nice gloss on the paint and it has received no more or no less care than my Dakota.
The gray primer is showing a lot both on the hood and roof. Waxing keeps it from rusting.

Beverly your fourth sentence explains why the paint is fading. Just like the guy that made the 2nd response to the original post said. Yuo gonna live in the south, and buy dark paint, its gonna fade. The TSB David posted is for CHIPPING not fading so don't even start on that one. I have a FLAME RED one that is almst 7 years old, I live an hour south of detriot, no fade no chip no nothing wrong with the original paint. It has NEVER ever been in a garage for more then 3 hours, and after a good wash and wax looks good aas new.

Dodge is NOT the only company to have (have had) paint problems. GM , Ford , Mitsubishi , Toyota , and yes even Nissan all have had paint peeling problems. They all have stood behind them and repainted them when they were UNDER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY.

Your truck is almost 10yrs. old and you want Dodge to repaint it for free?!

Get real people , if you like the truck so much , go have it prof. stripped and painted , then it will outlast everything else on the truck , as it will be 10 yrs. newer than the rest of it.

Hey paint guy, did you even read all of the messages.
Like I said my truck is a 1999 and the clearcoat is flaking of on the hood. Since I first posted my message last year the clearcoat is now flaking off of the roof and the bedrails also. I took it to the dealership and they said there is nothing they can do. I know paint jobs are not going to last for 10-12 years but I think that 4 years is not to much to ask. If i fart to dam close to my truck clearcoat flakes off.
I understand that vehicle manfactures were having problems in the early 90's but everyone else seemed to fix there paint probles. Not dodge. You would think that they would have improved the paint after having so many problems. But I guess not.

bleachBlakDak...did YOU read my response , it was aimed at larry8 and people that have older peeling trucks.
You have a different paint problem , and yes I believe Dodge should at least pay part of your paint job costs , maybe even all.
It depends on the warr. coverage. When it sais 3yrs on the paint , then thats how long they should cover it. If it has a 5yr. warr. on the paint they should cover it for 5yrs. If they wont , then you need to find a new dealer that will , or contact Dodge yourself.

Like it has been stated before , you can`t expect ANY company to warr. things forever , it will just cost you and me more $$$ in the long run.

Not sure how many people have owned it before me, but the only problem i've had with the paint is chipping and scratching, cuz some dumba$$ didnt know how to take care of it. It gets waxed with a high grade wax at least once a month, so maybe that's what keeps it shinin real nice. Now if there's any test on paint in this country, it's alaskan highways. They are the worst i've ever seen. Well that's all i got to say
