I've got a 99 with a 5.2L. The problem is the brake light and ABS light stay on. Also, the speedometer doesn't start until I reach 35mph and the overhead computer is giving numbers that are way off. I had just recently installed a JET, but removed it and the problems continued. Anybody out there with a same experience or an idea what going on?

I had the same problem with the brake and ABS lights on my 95 Dakota. They came on immediately after the ABS (which had never worked when needed) suddenly kicked in while coming to a routine stop at a traffic light under perfect stopping conditions. I unplugged the ABS module (located behind the glove box on that model, probably in the same spot on yours), and the lights stayed off. Since I never had operational ABS to begin with, I lost nothing. It was after the warranty expired, and I shudder to think what a new ABS module would have cost. I don't know about your speedo and overhead computer, but if it happened at the same time as your ABS, I would suspect a bad ground (or other connection), or a power surge of some sort fried both modules.

Yep, I've had that problem too! About three weeks after I finally had my idle air control module, or whatever it's called, fixed I had the ABS and brake warning lights come on. The weird thing is, I had just taken out the Stage 2 Jet Chip, piece of crap! When I took out the chip I guess I bent or broke one of the pins in the ECU, and blown the ABS module. They replaced the ECU,it was under warranty. When they finally had it ready I was working out of state and my father picked it up for me. When I got home the ABS and brake lights were still on!! The frickin idiots had forgotten to replace the ABS module. I havn't had it fixed yet. Oh yeah I'm on my third set of brake rotors, and the frikin truck squeaks and/or rattles when I turn sharpley! I almost hate my truck!!

I started reading up on the abs light thing when I was cruising up the interstate, hit a bump at a bridge and the lights came on and then went off on my 98 5.2 SLT.
It seems the sensor at the differential is bad. It costs about $30 from the dealer and takes about 15 minutes and a 13mm and a 15 mm socket to replace it. The dealers see these ALL the time.

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT:

Symptoms: ABS and Brake lights on. Speedo not working until I hit 30 mph.

Fix: Replace ABS sensor at differential.

Hey, fellow Dakota owners!

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

The input I've found on this site has been a ton of help (especially that from Rascal!).

OK, I was driving back from Corpus Christi yesterday (I live in San Antonio) when my ABS light and brake light came on. I didn't know what to make of it -- and my 4 year old daughter was riding in the truck with me. I was more than a little freaked out -- didn't know if my brakes were about to fail or not. I checked out the entire system physically and everything was fine.

I came home and started searching for information on this issue that was specific to '98 2x4 Dakotas. I found this site and it worked out great. I called the local Dodge dealer and got a new sensor ($32.85 including tax) that included a jumper cable to turn the sensor 90 degrees on the rear diff. The Mopar part included excellent directions on installation.

This installation took me about an hour -- mostly due to the old sensor being stuck in the differential hole. I needed a socket wrench and a box wrench to do the job -- and a standard screwdriver to pry the old sensor out.

Total cost: $37 (parts, Copenhagen and a couple of Cokes).

Total time: A little over an hour.

good job guys! most generally, with and eratic abs operation/light on . its one of the speed sensers. Chrysler isn't theonly one having problems with them... GM sensers ain't any better and the frount ones for the 4x4 full sized trucks ,and most of the frt frive cars ....is the whole hub/bearing assembly! range in price from175 to 400 bucks each! for everybodys piece of mind- if the abs light is on... the antilock is disabbled ELECTRICALLY. you still have 100% full hydralic brakes just like we always had. Hope this helps. Bill

All of this information and an email from another owner helped me resolve my issue with this rear speed sensor. My difficulty was removing (you'll need a thin blade to get under this until you can then get a longer bladed screwedriver under it to pry it out) and getting back in. (Simply let the bolt seat it back in place, it won't break it as I feared.) Remove the wire/connector after getting the switch out of the differential.

I also did ohm out the new one before installing: 1846 ohms.

Thanks for everyone who contributted.

Thanks for the good words guys. I had an ABS light, a BRAKE light, and my speedometer didn't register till 20 MPH on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4.
After reading these posts I went to the local dealership, gave him my VIN # and told him I needed the speed sensor located on the rear differential. He gave me MOPAR part # 56028187.
Then I disconnected the battery (hanes manual recommends it, and after 30 seconds with no battery the ABS fault codes clear to remove the light).
There's a bolt holding down the retaining bracket that holds the speed sensor in place on TOP of the rear differential (requires some contortion). I removed the bolt, unplugged the sensor, and pulled the sensor out. Had some difficulty prying that thing out, and about the same putting the new one in. Then I just plugged it back in, bolted it down and reconnected the battery. 30 minutes and the truck was good to go. Thanks again.

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4X4. I changed my oil last week. While driving at about 70 mph the ABS and Brake light came on. I pulled over turned the engine off. I restarted it and the ABS/Brake Lights were out until I reached about 70 mph. I read thes notes and replaces the speed sensor on the differential. It did not fix it. Do I need to disconnect the Battery cable when I do this?, I didnt, Anyone got any clues on how to fix this??

6-16-04 i went to my mechanic to replace rear sensor .didnt work both lights still came on then i went to the dealer.$876 later they made the light go out but one week later it came back on. they then saiod the 4 ' black cord that runs under the frame gets kinks in it from the car being on a service rack and the suspensionbending it down. that was $56 dollars. no laborrr what a break. the first time there was a short somewhere else.. but i dont know where. now in 2-05 the light came on again while driving on pa turnpike. one parts man said it could be the front speed sensors near thebrakes. he said clean them. he said chevy s10s have that problem. i am getting the pu inspected monday and ill have him check it out he can clear the codes but they might come back. then ill call the dealer to see if he will waive the diagnosticfee since i already gave him my life savings the last 2 times i went in. ill let you all know

ABS+Break lights come on with ignition and stay on, no speedo before ~20mph, stalls out at rpm below ~800...
Purchased new ABS sensor on rear diff ($51 Calif bucks), 15 minutes under the truck (spare tire removed), and all fixed.
Thanks! You no doubt saved me hundreds $$$.

I have the same prob. ABS and brake lights come on about 50mph and stay on until I restart the truck. Replaced the diff speed sensor, checked fuses, checked the brake switch and still have same prob. When I use the brakes (before the lights come on), the ABS seems to seems to be confused because I can hear the pump under the hood constantly adjusting. Does the trans. output sensor have any influence on the abs system?
