I was just told that on TV was an article about Dakotas being recalled for their steering. Couldn't get anymore information than that. Did anyone else see this or know anything about this type of recall?

the recall is actually for a bad clockspring that causes your driver's side airbag to be inoperable. it is not a steering problem but the problem is in the steering column.

The recall is for a Driver side airbag like the post above me stated but your air bag will work as long as the airbag light isnt lit.

I have a 99 SLT 5.2L and when it is hot I get a clicking noise from my steering colum and it gets louder the hotter it gets. You can acutally feel a bump or something in the steering wheel when you hear the noise. I just bought it used so I dont know how long that has been going on. Anyone got any ideas why?

I read a TSB in Mopar Magazine, that said there may be some clicking in the steering column caused by the cruise control. If it was on at the time that might be the problem as the article stated that it only happened when the cruise was activated...may not be your problem but thought I would let you know

I have a '94, and back in '96 it was recalled for a steering problem I had a couple of times. When coming around a sharp corner with the wheel turned close to lock, my key chain would swing up and get caught in the back of the steering wheel preventing me from straightening the wheel. Twice I ran off the road, thankfully at low speed. I even took my key off of the keyring and just left it in the ignition by itself. After they replaced the back cover to the steering wheel, I had no problems.

Here is the TSB for the problem you are experiencing. I am fighting with my dealership to fix it. They do not even want to try. They are told me there was nothing they could do. I got the TSB and called Dodge. They are supposed to make the dealer at least look into the issue.

NUMBER: 19-009-00

GROUP: Steering

DATE: Dec. 15, 2000

SUBJECT:
Popping Sensation/Sound In Steering Column While Turning

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves repositioning the steering column on the steering column mounting brackets.

MODELS:
2001 (AN)Dakota
2001 (DN)Durango
2001 (R1)Dakota (International Markets)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A popping sensation/sound can be felt and/or heard in the steering column during sharp turns (parking lot maneuvers).

DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR PROCEDURES:
Start the engine. Rotate the steering wheel to the extreme right and then to the extreme left while monitoring for a popping sound or sensation. If a popping sound or sensation can be heard and/or felt in the steering column while turning, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Start the engine.

2. Rotate the steering wheel so that the steering wheel is in an upside down position then remove the ignition key to lock the steering wheel in this position.

3. Remove the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement.

4. Using a trim stick or another suitable wide-bladed tool, gently pry the upper edge of the steering column opening cover. Pry lust below the cluster bezel on each side of the steering column away from the instrument panel far enough to disengage the snap clip retainers from the receptacles in the instrument panel.

5. Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel.

6. Loosen the steering column attaching nuts.

7. Bounce the steering wheel lightly in a vertical motion to normalize the alignment.

8. Without influencing the new location of the steering column, tighten the rear driver side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

9. Next, tighten the front passenger side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

10. Then, tighten the front driver side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

11. Tighten the rear passenger side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

12. Position the steering column opening cover to the instrument panel.

13. Align the snap clip retainers on the steering column opening cover with the receptacles in the instrument panel.

14. Press firmly on the steering column opening cover over the snap clip locations until each of the snap clips is fully engaged in its receptacle.

15. Install and tighten the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

16. Start the engine then, rotate the steering wheel back to its normal position.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

Chris, this string has been out for a while, so you may have fixed it already. But, my Dakota did the same thing. The dealership said it was not covered by warranty, so I took stuff apart. Anyways, the toe plate (where the column goes through the firewall) is mounted by 2 bolts. You can loosen it, rotate it, then tighten it back down. It helped my popping sound...

I have a 98 Dakota, and i had this same problem when i got her new. The problem is with the steering shaft where it attaches to the steering box. There was a service bulletin on it, and they replaced it under warrany with a new Borgeson unit. Fixed all the popping and steering wheel problems.

I have a 2001 and have had it back 5 times for the popping noise. They have replaced the rack and pinion, upper control arm and even the brakes after having several different tech's look at it. They finally greased the steering stops and it curbed the noise for a day or two. Its back now just as it was from the start. As long as they were replacing parts out of their pockets I didn't mind too much but taking it back sure gets old.

My 98 Dakota with 53,000 miles went to the shop today and I was told the rack and pinion needs to be replaced and about $1000.00 repair bill. The steering sort of binds but will then release. I was told the vehicle is out of warranty. Anyone know of any recalls, etc that might help Thanks

I think the problem is the rack and pinion steering unit. It's JUNK! If yours is out of warrenty like mine, you can buy one for about 275.00 @ this site http://buy-steering.com/index.htm It's not hard to install either. Deffinately need an alignment when done but I did it myself and all popping went away. And mine's lifted. Just a thought.

Wouldn't want any other!

Chris I think I know what your talking about Ihave a 99 sport since I've had it it had a light clunk,I first thuoght it was in dash, but while cruising down highway I could feel it through steering wheel. but with slight left or right pressure on steering it would stop .After much searching I think it's the steering shaft nuckle .

when its hot from exhaust man. it loosens slightly
enough to rattle wheather its grease thinning or metal expansion I dont know. It wont do it in winter when temps get below 30 degrees.

its very frusterating listening to it but it has not gotten worse in 50k miles.

if anyone knows where I can find one with grease zerks please let me know .

rattles SUCK NUTS!!!

Oh and by the way why don't dealer mechanics ever hear noises when you take them for a ride , Like the clunk on the front right of my truck when I take a left hand turn and hit a bump . I've seen threads posted here with the exact same problem more than once.

The mechanics act as if I'm a dumbass thats hearin things.

Imight be a dumbass but I'm not hearing things

BTW what the hell is that noise anyone figure it out

Hey terry,i dont think its just dealers that dont hear noises because i have the same problems when i take my truck some where.Every one looks at me like im hearing things and they say that there isnt anything wrong when i know there has to be.It took me 3 or 4 times taking it to midas till they heard the knocking noise in the front end and it does it every time you turn.So i think they just dont want to hear so they dont.I always take mine to midas and have them look at it because its free and then take it to dodge and have it fixed. But the reason in this is its not just you having problems w/stupid mechanics.

Now the brakes are squeling like crazy!! Any help the dealer said ALL DODGE vehicles brakes squeked!! I laughed at him and walked away.

My 98 Dokota was making a clunking noise when I'd make a left turn on a bumpy road. The problem started at around 40000 miles. Took it too the dealer who said the problem was in the center link but that it was still in-spec and didn't need to be replaced. Now, it's got 60000 on it and the problem has become worse. In addition to the clunking noise in the steering, there is other noise and looseness in the suspension. This time the dealer says the steering shaft needs to be replaced as well as inner wheele bearings and tie rod ends. Also, I've had continual problems with rotors. I'd get them turned and within a few thousand miles, they'd be warped again. I'm wondering if the vibration from the rotors is causing these other parts to go bad. Anyway the steering shaft and the bearings were under waranty. Thank God I sprang for the extended waranty. I paid through the nose for the other stuff. Better luck to you.

My 2000 QC needed the shafts between the steering column and rack and pinion replaced to fix the clunking in the steering column. A GM mechanic friend of mine told me what the problem was because GM has the same problem. I think the Dakota uses Saginaw steering column, like GM.

A bigger problem is Ball Joints. How do you grease them? My uppers were replaced under warranty because they wore out, but there seems to be no way of preventing the problem from occuring again unless you lub the ball joints with a needle through the boots. A poor solution but I don't know of an alternative.
