 Subject: 2 ohm or 4 ohm?

alright, i am putting two 10s in my truck with one 2 channel amp, the speakers i am buying are dual voice coil speakers. the amp i want is stable to 2 ohms per channel. to get a 2 ohm load per channel should i buy 2 ohm subs or 4 ohm subs.

if the subs are DVC then get 4 ohm. wire them so you get a 2 ohm load, and run one off each channel.

jam, I'm not sure that is such a good idea, but given slim's comment that the amp is stable down to 2 ohms per channel, that may be the only way.
While it will work, each sub might have a slightly different sound (depending on your low-pass filter, and if audio source is mixed in stereo down to the <200Hz. level) as one sub will have the left channel output and the other will have the right. You need a mono feed into the amp's left/right inputs to ensure that that will work best.
I would recommend bridging the amp to one channel if it's possible. Then get 8 ohm DVC subs. Wire each sub's DVCs in parallel down to 4ohm per sub, then wire the two subs in parallel down to 2 ohms.
Or, if you want 4 ohm subs, wire each of the sub's DVCs in parallel to 2 ohms, then wire each sub in series to 2 ohms.
Or, if you want 2 ohm subs, wire each of the sub's DVCs in series to 4 ohms, then wire each sub in parallel to 2 ohms.

If you bridge the amp you can't run it below 4ohms unless specified. With 4ohm dvc's you can run then either way. To get 2ohm from one sub just put the two positives together and the two negatives together. To get a total of 4ohm's wire each to 2 ohm's then take the positive lead from one sub and the negative from the other and wire them together, now the two remaining leads go to the amp.

What jam0o0 said will work fine. DVC 4 ohms in together for a 2 ohm load each. Check JL, Kicker, Rockford or Crutchfields websites for wiring digrams to show you how it's done.
To avoid the problems Lurkin is talking about just make sure the box is divided into two equal but seperately sealed chambers (even if vented) then it will be OK.
Basically your running the subs in stereo, most people run them mono off a single channel of a bridged amp, but it works either way - just depends on which way the amp makes the most power.

rite ive got a kicker comp vr-122 its 12" its the 2 ohm version and has dual vioce ciols. is it possible 4 me 2 wire it in a certain way so that i get it as 4ohm load so i can hook it up a kicker ix702 2 channel amp at 210w x 1 bridged @ 4ohms. can someone please tell me what the hell is goin on cos i hav no idea wat im talking about here?????? thanks in advance

Sean, you need to wire the 2ohm DVC sub in series. That will present a 4ohm load to the amp. AS JMII said above, check out the web sites of Rockford, Kicker or Crutchfield for pics.
What you will be doing is wiring the following:
o + from the amp to the positive on one of the voice coils (VC)
o + from the VC above to the - on the same VC
o - from the first VC above to the + on the second VC
o + on second VC to - on second VC
o - on second VC to the amp's -
Basically you are daisy-chaining the amp's power through the sub's VCs.

Thanks 4 that Lurken it has been troubling me 4 some time now! while im on the subject how do i bridge my 2 channel kicker ix702 amplifier so that it runs 1 channel at 4 ohms? or is that impossible? its 70w x 2 @ 4ohms, 105 watts x 2 @ 2ohms so wat power will it be if i bridged it into 1 channel and at wat ohms wud it run??? cheers

You'll need to find a manual for that amp. How they are bridged depends on the manufacturer. I've seen some where you connect to the L, or R outputs, then flip a switch, and I've seen some where you connect to the R + and the L -.
You also need to find out it it is stable running bridged. Usually if it runs a 2ohm stereo load, it will run a 4 ohm mono load, but I can't tell you for sure. Check out Kicker's site if you don't have a manual.

Alright i need some serious help! Im 15 years old and i just bought my system... Ok i got an audiobahn aw1206t sub and a volfenhag zx7160 1000w 4channel amp. My sub is a dual 4ohm. My amp runs the most power (250w x 4channels) at 2ohms when the 4 channels are brigged so it runs like a 2 channel amp.. How can i wire my sub so i can get the most power using both channels?? People told me to wire it in parrallel but that only takes up 1 channel and that would be only 500 watts goin to my sub how can i get the other channel involved (so it runs at 1000w) so my sub still presents a 2ohm load to the amp? A diagram would be nice but i just need serious help..

This will not work because if you wire each to 2 ohms then wire the 2 ohms subs in series there will be a serious cancelation problem. Most amps are stable to 4 ohms briged.. wire 4 ohm dvcs in series to get 8 ohms then wire the subs together in parallel.
For anyone that hasnt wired 4 ohm dvc to 2 ohms and then connects 2 in series.try it IT DOESNT NOT WORK.

ok heres the deal i just got a cuspid(?) 1600 watt amp 4 channel amp( 4 ohms to 4 channels) and 2 10' power acoustik 800 watt subs ( dual 4 ohm voice coil) first i wired my subs in the box for 4 ohms and then they went into 2 of the channels into the amp ( they didnt hit very hard liek that) bc they didnt hit very hard that way i know i need to bridge the 4 channels to the 2 subs to get the whole 1600 watts out...so my question is how do i bridge a 4 channel amp to my 2 subs ... ( i herad from a friend that wen u bridge a 4 channel amp u need to do it on 2 ohms so does that mean i need to re-wire my subs to a 2 ohm rating??? pleaaasseee help me some one asap!! thanx

what causes that
